I used a student that struggled with learning also but after finding a way to get help, I know that the struggle is more about confidence than the topic. I love cars, reading, and watching movies. I understand the struggle so I would take my time with you and we'll get through it together.

I reward after good work. I like slowing down and breaking apart the work to make it easier to understand. For 1st graders, it's easy to reward after understanding the work which helps with confidence and overthinking. As a tutor, I don't think of as myself a teacher for the student but as a friend so they can be more comfortable and more willing to learn.
