About Austin

I am a graduate of Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and was a high school chemistry teacher for 3 years. I am currently doing Grant Writing and tutoring on the side. I have been tutoring students in Math and Chemistry since 2018. Seeing students who struggle in a concept and get that aha moment brings me great joy in seeing their academic and personal growth. I enjoy making an impact on the students that I tutor.

My teaching method is explaining a concept to the student from a conceptual standpoint and then go over an example problem that I explain the process of solving thoroughly. I then have the student try to do multiple problems themselves and will give assistance when needed. I will have them do many problems until they master the concept through doing many problems.

In my lessons I value tailoring how I approach the concepts based on the individual student I tutor. I use examples to help drive the concepts that I know the student will be able to relate to or student uses their prior knowledge to understand the concept. I also have empathy as a key component of my lessons. I always am encouraging and have utmost care with students that need that extra time to master a concept.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in teaching and private tutoring shortly after completing my undergrad degree in Electrical Engineering. I started a Masters degree in EE while tutoring math to elementary and middle school kids at Mathnasium. I found that I really enjoyed tutoring students and helping them more than Engineering so I furthered pursued teaching and tutoring from that point.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach biology, chemistry, physics, and all levels of mathematics. I enjoy discussing with students what their future plans are and how improving in their skills in the subject I am tutoring will assist them in reaching their goal. I enjoy being optimistic and don't lik talking about negativity or focusing on a student's limitations instead focusing on the student learning style and how we can succeed in mastering the content.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My most inspirational teacher was my high school physics teacher. He formed great communication with the students and had excellent skills in managing the students and how to best utilize their potential. I enjoy assessing all of my students and see what are their strengths and how I can best utilize that for them to learn the content in their own unique approach.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think being to analyze the learning style of every student and how to best accomdotate the student's learning style when tutoring them is a crucial role a good tutor has mastered. Having patience and empathy is also important as well having the student feel that they are supported no matter the struggle they experience. Having expertise in the subject the tutor is tutoring is essential as well.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have a wide variety of experiences in teaching and tutoring. I have taught students in high socioeconomic backgrounds and students in low socioeconomic backgrounds. I have found that these students from these different backgrounds tend to operate very differently and have different challenged. Students from higher economic backgrounds tend to have more anxiety and pressure from their parents that can lead to them doubting their self-worth. Students from lower economic backgrounds tend to be distrusting of others and not value wanting to learn the content. I have found that analyzing the students strengths and weakness and best incorporating strategies tailored to them leads to the best results.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some students are less trusting than others of their environments. I have found that students that have had more trauma growing up can take more time to have them receptive to learning new content but once they learn to trust me as their teacher / tutor it is amazing how much they grow in content mastery. This is also why it's important to always have empathy for the student since it is crucial to have them trust you for them to have the drive to master the content.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I having a passion for teaching in general and working with children. I enjoy being able to leave an impact and motivating students that they are able to accomplish challenging feats such as mastering subjects such as math or chemistry. Being supportive and showing to the student that people do care about their wellbeing and their future is something that is very important as well and I value serving that role. I am also passionate of passing down the knowledge I have of challenging subjects and able to give advice and instill good habits to the student that I have developed over the years.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

My vast experience in teaching and tutoring I believe makes me a Super Prof. I have strong expertise in the subjects I teach in based on my background doing Electrical Engineering and being a science teacher. I have been tutoring students since 2018 and students have always had a positive experience learning from me. I have recommendations and reviews that also reflect the positive experiences and impact that students have had from me. I always strive to improve my skillset which will greatly help students as the learning landscape is always changing which demands a tutor who is always learning and growing themselves. This is a pivotal role that I strive to always keep up to date in.
