About Eric

Welcome!! Delighted you're here, and thinking about learning one of the most exciting instruments in the musical universe! I started playing at 6 years old, began playing professionally at 13, went to Berklee College of Music, then The Eastman School of Music, and toured for 15 years with pop and rock bands all over the world. I was excited by the Folk music scene, especially the real acoustic pioneers like Davy Graham, Bert Jansch and Richard Thompson. I have always been excited by open-tunings and learnt to fingerpick at the earliest age; Steve Howe from YES was and still is a major influence. I always sought to be well-versed in all styles and worked hard to develop fluency in slide guitar, finger-style guitar, Nashville Country, and avant-garde compositions in the spirit of Phillip Glass, and Bela Bartok. The goal is to help my students express their thoughts and emotions using the musical language of notes, intervals, chords and metre to communicate. It is a wonderful skill to develop and you will have it with you over a lifetime. My teaching experience is with a range of ages - 9-year-olds, up to 60-year-olds. I have taught in The Fairfax County Public Schools, and for the past 15 years in master classes when not touring, and now in scheduled one-on-one private instruction during this current malaise. "He has been on the road, in the studio, on stage, in front of or behind Jerry Douglas, Leon Redbone, John Mayall, Dr. John, David Bromberg, Andy McKee, John Hammond Jr., too many to name... With open tunings, slide guitar, lap-slap tone guitar, and a remarkably aggressive fingering style approach, watching Eric Sommer will make you jump out of your seat and holler for joy! There are very few players who have maintained this authentic Americana style of guitar and Eric Sommer is one of the very best."

My goal with all my students is to get them playing immediately! Theory, chords, inversions, and all the actual mechanics, can come later... as the student develops, it will make more sense. For beginners, a few simple chords will go a long way towards getting new players involved while developing an intimate relationship with their instrument. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to cover everything from Wes Montgomery to Stevie Ray Vaughan, but ideally, I like to give them the tools they need to play whatever they like. Nothing worth doing is without a challenge, and to really enjoy the guitar, a certain amount of practice and patience is the initial requirement! It just gets easier as you move forward! 30 minutes is a long time, and there is a lot of information to absorb. We want to make this fun and exciting, and fatigue is a serious consideration. Short, intense lessons are my approach - you can video them, I send the student a copy to review, but I am interested in presenting the principles of the guitar, and practice and study is something they do on their own time at home. It is fun, exciting and loaded with great info! I tell all my students this: Everyone from Clapton to Townsend to Hendrix to Steve Howe has been EXACTLY where you are today... it's a wonderful journey!
