About Helen

- What kind of experience do you have?

As part of my role as Co-Principal Oboe with the Southbank Sinfonia orchestra, I have been a visiting oboe tutor at schools such as Marlborough College (Wiltshire), Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School (Shepherd's Bush) and King Edward VI School (Southampton), and have also given group oboe masterclasses and mentored students at Guernsey Music Service and In Harmony Lambeth, amongst others. I also have considerable experience tutoring privately, and have enjoyed teaching a range of ages.

As a professional oboist, my freelance orchestral experience includes work with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and I have performed as a concerto soloist with conductors Antonio Pappano and John Wilson.

Yes, I have a current DBS clearance.

About the lesson

I am a freelance oboist and tutor, originally from Cheshire and now based in London. I enjoy passing on my musical knowledge and experience to others, and look forward to hearing from you.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach oboe and cor anglais from beginner to advanced level (up to conservatoire entrance), and offer reed-making and music theory lessons either alongside this or separately.

Additionally, I teach piano up to ABRSM Grade 5 standard, and offer general musicianship advice and assistance.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold recent Master of Music and Bachelor of Music (Hons) degrees from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Orchestral Performance from the Royal College of Music in London.

- How much do you charge?

£35 per hour, or £20 per half hour.

- Where do you teach?

I can teach at my home in Southfields, or travel to students' houses in South West, West and Central London areas (it may be necessary to charge extra to cover travel expenses if travelling to students' houses further afield).

- When are you available?

As I am a freelance musician, I can be quite flexible with timings, and am happy to discuss this with prospective students.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I enjoy teaching all ages and abilities, from children to adults.

I teach oboe and cor anglais to an advanced level, and piano, music theory and musicianship to ABRSM Grade 5 standard.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for ABRSM exams if desired, as well as auditions, competitions, concerts, recitals and school/college performance exams.

I am also happy to teach those who would like to learn for fun, without the stress of exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I would be willing to discuss the possibility of Skype lessons, if a prospective student lives outside the London area.
