About Lexi
I am a high school junior in Seattle, WA, who enjoys snowboarding, softball, and baking! Although school may be tough sometimes, I have found a passion for many different subjects and hope to share this same love for learning with you. I have earned a GPA Honor Roll for the past three years of my high school career, a Wingman Award for academic excellence, and have engaged in my school's government for the past year as an event coordinator and just recently won senior senator for the next school year! My approach as a tutor is tailored to each student's learning style and needs so that they are effectively able to progress and excel in their studies. I'm looking forward to this journey!

Working on one's literary skills is critically important in developing reading, writing, and various other life skills. I hope that through my teaching, students will be able to broaden their knowledge and further their comprehension.
To further a student's skills, I include close readings, text annotations, journaling, and different creative assignments into my plans! My teaching method to employ these techniques into my tutoring sessions is entirely adaptable and reliant on the student's needs and goals for their own education. It's vitally important that to succeed, the student and I set clear objectives so that we can track their progress together (this way we can celebrate on our big wins!). What I value most as a tutor, is feedback from my students. I recognize that we can all grow as a part of this process and journey together, and love to hear anything that I can fix and/or improve to make my lessons more efficient!
What a typical lesson plan may look like:
Objective: By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to properly annotate key themes, characters, and symbols in a fictional story.
Introduction: Introduce the objective of the lesson, and ask for their interpretation of what this means before giving a clear construct description of it. Break it down with them, make sure that it is understandable what is being asked of them and what they need to do in order to achieve it.
Talk about and identify well known themes and symbols that might come up amongst various stories. Examples include: Revenge and justice, courage and heroism, while symbols may be written in the form of fire, water, different colors, and what these different concepts all allude to. Discuss themes or concepts they might identify with certain stories they already know.
Body of the lesson: Guided Reading (20 minutes). Read the short story together, annotating key concepts and ideas throughout. Stop to discuss if there's any confusion or missed important parts.
Analysis and Understanding (30 minutes):
Theme Analysis- Discuss and write about the main or common themes of the story. Ask open-ended questions (ex. "What is the author saying about love and hate in this story?")
Character Analysis- Analyze the main characters and their progression throughout the story. How does their role impact the story? What are specific examples of this?
Literary Concepts- Discuss recurring literary concepts including metaphors, similes, imagery, repetition, etc. If a term is unfamiliar, or a new one is introduced, write down and discuss the definition and use of it. Further discuss how these contributed overall to the story.
Wrap up of the lesson (10 minutes):
Summarize key points and ask them open-ended questions to see the student's understanding of what was learned. Ask where they feel in regards to the objective, and re-instate some techniques and methods they can use on their own time to continue developing their learning.
Q&A around the lesson and clear up any confusion.
Homework Assignment (if necessary)- includes a quick synopsis of what the lesson covered, as well as a small introduction into the next lesson.
End of lesson!
What sets me apart as a tutor is my passion and experience in working with kids. I'm confident in my ability to work with young students patiently and thoughtfully as I understand one's education should be enjoyed instead of burdened. As a tutor, one of my main values is to make sure their learning journey is engaging and exciting!
My lessons are targeted for students K-8th grade looking to further their literature, reading, comprehension, and writing skills!
