About Erika
In my experience teaching saxophone, I’ve come to believe that the most impactful musical growth happens when students are encouraged to blend discipline with self-discovery. From the very first lesson, I focus on building a strong technical foundation: proper breath control, embouchure formation, tone development, hand positioning, and finger agility are emphasized consistently to ensure clarity and control across the full range of the instrument. These fundamentals are never taught in isolation—they are always tied directly to music that excites the student, whether that’s a blues riff, a jazz head, or a film score melody. I integrate articulation, dynamics, and phrasing early on so students can begin playing expressively from the start, not just mechanically. I believe that a technically sound musician must also be a curious and creative one. That’s why I fold improvisation into the lesson process early, starting with small melodic variations and expanding to full solos over simple progressions. I teach music theory contextually, using pieces the student is playing to introduce concepts like chord structure, modal interchange, or rhythmic variation, which makes abstract theory feel tangible and applicable. Lessons are interactive and often involve listening assignments—exploring players like Sonny Rollins, Candy Dulfer, or John Coltrane to develop a sense of tone, articulation, and improvisational voice. Students are encouraged to record themselves, reflect on their sound, and bring those insights into future practice sessions. I also tailor lesson plans toward the student’s long-term goals, whether that’s building a jazz solo book, preparing for a school audition, or composing original work. One of my most memorable teaching moments was watching a middle school student who struggled with performance anxiety find their voice during a duet performance at a community recital; the look of joy and pride on their face reminded me that music education is ultimately about connection—both to the instrument and to oneself. I strive to create an encouraging, structured, and adaptive learning space where every student feels free to explore, make mistakes, take risks, and grow. For me, teaching saxophone is not just about notes and fingerings; it’s about helping someone express who they are and who they’re becoming through music.

In my saxophone studio, I strive to create a space where students feel empowered to take ownership of their musical journey. I believe that learning an instrument is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about developing a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us. I begin each lesson by assessing the student's current level and setting clear, achievable goals. This collaborative approach ensures that the student feels invested in their learning process and understands the purpose behind each exercise and piece of music.
Technique is a priority in my teaching, but I also emphasize the importance of musicality. I encourage students to think beyond the notes on the page, to interpret the music with their own voice, and to connect emotionally with the repertoire. I incorporate a variety of musical styles into lessons, from classical etudes to contemporary pop songs, to expose students to different musical traditions and to keep lessons engaging.
For students interested in improvisation, I provide a structured approach that includes ear training, scale practice, and improvisation exercises. I believe that improvisation is a powerful tool for developing creativity and musical expression. Technology is a valuable asset in my teaching. I use recording devices to allow students to listen back to their performances, helping them identify areas for improvement and track their progress over time.
I also utilize digital resources such as sheet music apps and metronomes to enhance practice sessions. Beyond technical instruction, I aim to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment. I celebrate each student's achievements, no matter how small, and encourage them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. My ultimate goal is to help students become not only proficient saxophonists but also confident, expressive musicians who find joy in their musical journey.
