About Calum
I have always found History thoroughly absorbing. Our past is a remarkable tapestry of interweaving threads that can both delight and baffle. One of the most fulfilling elements of my university studies has been engaging with the public and sharing my passion for exploring and understanding our past. As a PhD student I had the opportunity to teach the subject and leapt at it. Teaching is one of the most valuable activities someone can undertake, helping someone to deepen their understanding of a subject and achieve their full potential. Over the past few years I have had dozens of students and received exceptionally positive feedback for my teaching. My teaching has been described as 'dynamic' and 'clear' and I have been consistently praised for creating an atmosphere of 'learning by discussion.' I will do all I can to help you enjoy and succeed in the subject.

I have a high level of qualification in History and have extensive experience teaching it to a range of ages. I hold a PhD in Anglo-Saxon History from the University of Cambridge and a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in History from Trinity College, Dublin. I have wide experience teaching a variety of historical subjects at various levels. I have taught extensively on undergraduate courses, as well as delivering tutoring sessions to A-level and GCSE pupils. I have also been invited into primary schools to talk to their pupils about History. I believe in an active form of learning. The worst lessons are those spent staring at PowerPoints. Instead, I offer engaged, dynamic teaching, built around the discussion of a particular event or source. I encourage my students to think critically and explore the wider context of events to better understand them. I think it is imperative that students feel comfortable with their teachers and tutors, so that they feel confident to ask questions and push themselves in their work. As such, I seek to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I would recommend lessons of one hour but appreciate that this may not suit everyone and so I am happy to discuss lesson lengths with each new student. I am willing to take students at any age and any level.

I highly recommend Calum as a tutor. He is exceptionally organised with a great range of in-depth knowledge across various time periods. He has a great talent for explaining quite complicated historical concepts and breaking them down in a clear and helpful manner, making such ideas and theories far easier to understand. He has helped me a lot when it comes to improving the clarity of my argument and my grammar. Overall, he is a positive tutor that has a great rapport with his students.
