About Gary
I am a dedicated Social Sciences graduate (BA Hons) and an experienced professional with a strong background in Team Leadership and Human Resources. My passion for Modern Studies comes from seeing how political and social systems affect people in the real world. Unlike a standard textbook approach, I bring the curriculum to life by drawing on my professional experience working with Trade Unions, navigating employment law, and managing diverse teams in the aviation and customer service sectors. This allows me to explain complex concepts—such as industrial relations, social inequality, and democratic processes—in a way that is practical, relevant, and easy to understand. I studied for my degree through The Open University while working full-time, so I intimately understand the discipline, organisation, and motivation required to balance life and study. I use this experience to mentor my students, helping them not only with the course content but also with the study skills and confidence they need to succeed in their National 5 or Higher exams. My Teaching Approach and Methodology I take a practical, "real-world" approach to Modern Studies. Because I have a background in HR, Management, and working with Trade Unions, I don't just teach the theory of Democracy and Social Inequality—I help you understand how it actually works in the real world. My lessons are interactive and exam-focused. We will focus on: Essay Structure: Mastering the specific structure required for SQA exams (Point, Explain, Example) to ensure you pick up every possible mark. Source Handling: Learning how to quickly analyse data and sources to spot exaggeration or bias—a key skill for the exam. Connecting the News: We will use current events to give you fresh, relevant examples that impress examiners. Typical Lesson Length Lessons are typically 60 minutes. This allows us enough time to review a topic, discuss it, and practice a specific exam-style question together. I am flexible if you require shorter intensive revision sessions or longer deep-dive sessions. Qualifications and Experience I hold a BA (Hons) in Social Sciences from The Open University. As someone who studied for their degree while working, I understand the discipline required to succeed. My professional experience in Human Resources and Team Leadership means I have first-hand experience with employment law, workers' rights, and decision-making processes—all key topics in the Modern Studies curriculum.
