BIO
In school, mathematics was the only subject I understood and loved intrinsically, despite truly awful teachers at times! Fueled by my passion for the subject (and the desire for extra pocket money), I started tutoring at the age of 14, even helping some of my best friends pass their high school exams. I quickly realised I love making maths as fun and natural for others even more than I loved experiencing it myself. This still rings true to this day.
Throughout my Maths and Further Maths A-levels and my 4-year Integrated Master's degree at the University of Manchester, I continued tutoring and my passion for the subject and its communication only grew deeper. I was especially fond of Pure Maths in university, although more recently, I've grown my skills and appreciation in Applied Maths, Probability and Statistics, becoming a more balanced mathematician!
In 2020, I graduated from my Master's as one of the top-scoring students in my year. Since then, I've had a wonderfully diverse career path. I have been a full-time online maths tutor for a total of 2 years, and also dabbled in a PhD programme in Mathematics at UCL (which turned out not to be for me at that time) and worked full-time as a financial modelling analyst. Throughout these demanding ventures, I have always found time for my tutoring passion, taking on up to 10 to 15 hours weekly. I've now come back to tutoring full-time as I realised this is my true calling.
As for my hobbies, I love to cook, thanks to my French mother teaching me as a teenager. I'm also obsessed with cycling and bikepacking. I love to go on multi-day or even multi-week bikepacking trips.

Ultimately, my approach with each student will be highly personalised and collaborative, tailored to their needs and preference. That is the beauty of tutoring. However, below is what students and I find typically effective, and what often is missing from traditional teaching!
Content - The essential for the exam. 90% core exercises and exam-style problems, drawing on theory only for its applications. NOT cramming generic content. Even in a proof-based university module, special attention is paid to the ideas and problem-solving methods key to the course and most relevant to the exam.
Communication style - I create a friendly and safe environment, free of judgement, where students feel valued for expressing themselves honestly. In addition to the usual formalism, intuitive interpretations of concepts are offered through visualisation and analogy. I aim to be as revealing and as possible about the clues, key insights and problem-solving strategies I use to slowly take down problems that at first glance appear daunting.
Reinforcement and assessment - I will regularly set relevant and appropriately challenging homework and ask to submit it for discussion at the beginning of the next lesson. I repeatedly stress the importance of independent, focused practice and repetition. Something is not learned until it is mastered, with no outside aid needed, as required for the exam. A traditional idea but a correct and crucial one.

I found Mel to be an excellent tutor, not only because of his excellent maths skills, but his friendly personality and ability to find out what uniquely motivates each student, and to use that to push them to their full potential. Would fully recommend. Thank you Mel!
For the baccalauréat of our daughter you have been her best teacher ever. Because of you she had a good mark in maths. Thanks Mel for that
Mel was a good intern who worked well with the students. His planning and preparation still needed work by the time Mel left us, however he was only with us for a short time. Given the resources, Mel was able to inspire learning in the students he worked with and generally achieved good outcomes.

Mel impressed the staff at during the internship with his professionalism in seeking support and acting upon it.Mel is an excellent maths tutor. He is able to break down complex concepts very concisely and is very patient. He is very engaging and makes maths fun.
Highly recommended - used him for my A Levels and I even exceeded my target grade! He is one of my uni friends who is really good at mathematics and is sincere in everything he does. He loves math and has a deep understanding of it. He also knows clearly how to teach it. I bet if someone takes his class, anyone will learn a lot of things as well as a deep understanding of mathematics. I’ve seen him about 3 years, and I’ve had a great time talking about math with him. I’d love to take his tuition if I were a student:)
