About Amanda
I fell in love with languages at age 12 when I had my first French lesson. It opened up whole new worlds for me and I spent 6 months living in France after leaving school. It was clear to me that I should study languages at university but I decided to try something completely different and landed on Chinese. At the time there were very few universities offering Chinese degrees and I really didn't know what to expect but again I fell in love with Mandarin in the very first lesson. I went to live in China after graduating and met my husband there who is Spanish, so I then took an intensive Spanish course and am now fluent in French, Spanish and Mandarin. I didn't intend to become a teacher but I am frequently shocked at how badly languages are taught in schools in the UK and my goal is to instil confidence and love for languages in all my students. Language is all about communication so for me there is no "right" or "wrong" way to say something, the most important thing is to understand others and be understood, and this is often easier than people imagine. Having said that, grammar is an important framework that we base our learning on, but it doesn't have to be dry and boring. Language learning can and should be interesting and enjoyable and I do my very best to ensure it is.

I have a First Class degree in Chinese and lived in beijing for 24 years where I trained interpreters. Since returning to the Uk I have worked as a public service interpreter, translator and now as a language tutor. I have tutored beginners to university students, including through GCSEs, A levels and the HSK exams. I believe everyone can learn languages and that it should be fun and interesting. I have a Masters in Linguistics which has led to me developing different strategies for different needs and learning styles and aim to tailor my lessons to each student. For students who are speakers of English as a first language I also have the advantage of having struggled through the same issues as them when learning Mandarin, which can be very helpful. I have lost none of my enthusiasm for learning and speaking other languages and this comes across in my lessons where we use humour and videos as well as traditional textbooks for a rounded approach.
