About Asami

I am a Japanese–English bilingual language coach, Chartered Linguist (MA), and academic specialist with over 15 years of teaching experience. My work combines advanced linguistic expertise, academic rigour, and personalised coaching to support learners in achieving confident, real-world fluency in Japanese for academic, professional, and personal goals.

I hold two MA degrees: an MA in Creative and Critical Writing from the University of Sussex and an MA in English Literature, Language and Culture from Ochanomizu University in Tokyo. I have taught at the University of Sussex and on the MA Translation programme at London Metropolitan University, bringing the analytical depth and precision of advanced literary and linguistic study into highly tailored one-to-one coaching.

Alongside my academic work, I have worked professionally as a conference interpreter, translator, subtitler, and examination materials developer for UK governmental organisations. I also worked as a GCSE examiner, giving me detailed understanding of assessment criteria and how to guide students towards accurate, confident, and high-level performance. My professional experience enables me to support learners not only in grammar and vocabulary, but also in nuance, register, stylistic control, and cross-cultural communication.

I also have an educational background in psychotherapy, body-awareness practices, and communication work, which strongly informs my coaching approach. This allows me to support learners with confidence-building, communication anxiety, motivation, self-expression, and developing a sustainable and personalised relationship with language learning. My approach is attentive, adaptive, and centred around the individual learner rather than a purely textbook-based method.

I have supported high-achieving students from schools including Brighton College and Lancing College, helping students progress to universities such as the University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, and universities in Japan. I am experienced in preparing learners for demanding academic pathways, selective university entry, and professional communication in Japanese.

I coach students with goals including GCSE, A-level, and JLPT preparation, university applications, degree-level study, business communication, relocation to Japan, and the development of natural, real-world fluency. My approach is particularly suited to motivated learners seeking intellectual depth, precision of expression, and increasing independence and confidence in communication.

With a background in both literary scholarship and creative writing, I encourage structured thinking, careful analysis, and authentic self-expression. My coaching aims not only to improve language ability, but also to help students develop clarity, confidence, and their own independent voice across languages and cultures.

About the lesson

My Japanese language coaching is structured, personalised, and carefully tailored to each learner’s goals, strengths, and learning style. With over 15 years of teaching experience, I design sessions that combine academic rigour with supportive and engaging coaching, helping learners develop clarity, confidence, consistency, and measurable progress.

The first session is a free 30-minute consultation, during which we discuss your goals, current level, learning background, and preferred approach to study. Following the consultation, I provide a written learner profile, a brief diagnostic assessment, and a proposed study plan outlining recommended materials and strategies for your development. This creates a clear and transparent framework for long-term progress.

Ongoing sessions are purposeful and well-structured, and may include conversation practice, close reading, listening development, writing, translation, pronunciation work, and preparation for GCSE, A-level, and JLPT examinations. Depending on your goals, lessons may focus on academic achievement, natural communication, professional fluency, or cultural understanding.

I also provide professional and executive Japanese language coaching for learners preparing for university study, academic writing, business communication, presentations, interviews, or relocation to Japan. In addition, I offer small-group and 2-to-1 coaching for couples or friends preparing for travel to Japan who would like practical communication skills and cultural preparation in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Alongside linguistic training, my background in psychotherapy education, communication work, and body-awareness practices informs my coaching approach. I understand that language learning is closely connected to confidence, self-expression, motivation, and emotional safety, and I work attentively with each learner to create a supportive and intellectually stimulating learning environment.

I work with motivated learners at all stages, from complete beginners building strong foundations to advanced students seeking university-level fluency, academic precision, and refined cross-cultural communication skills.
