About Gregory
Eight years of teaching jazz guitar rests on years of playing it. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Guitar, and I perform regularly with trios and quartets in the area. My students hear about real gigs, real mistakes and real recoveries.
My teaching style is curious and encouraging. I ask students what they hear before telling them what I hear. A student who thought jazz was beyond him recently sat in with my quartet and held his own beautifully.
Music school preparation is a specialty, and my students have entered respected jazz programs. We cover repertoire, improvisation, ear tests and theory requirements thoroughly. Auditions stop being frightening when nothing about them is unfamiliar.
Jazz welcomes every player who approaches it honestly. If jazz calls to you, whether for music school or pure love, I would be glad to teach you. Message me and tell me which guitarist made you want to play.

Jazz improvisation is a language, and languages are learned by imitation then creation. My students transcribe short solos, absorb the vocabulary and gradually speak their own lines. This method has worked for generations of jazz players, and it works in my studio.
Music school auditions for jazz programmes have known requirements. We prepare standards in the expected keys, practise sight reading chord charts and rehearse playing with unfamiliar backing. One of my students impressed his audition panel by suggesting a substitution mid tune, and they loved it.
Technique serves the music always. We build the fingerboard knowledge, chord vocabulary and time feel that jazz demands. Exercises are always connected to real tunes.
I listen to a lot of music with my students. Knowing the tradition matters as much as playing it. Young improvisers learn where the language came from.
