About Michael
I make my living playing music. Since 2011, I have performed as a member of over two dozen groups with concurrent involvement in about a dozen on average since 2016. In any given week, I have gigs and rehearsals on electric bass, saxophone, and piano (which I have played for 21, 24, and 32 years, respectively) with regular instances of doubling or tripling in a single day. I learned how much I love theory as a saxophone major in the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG and the intervening years have been spent exploring, applying, discovering, and learning much more. As a performer, arranger, and composer with expertise on melodic, bass, and chordal instruments, I am able to offer a uniquely well-rounded and insightful approach to the relationships within music. I would love to share.

Starting by ear at age 3, I took music lessons throughout childhood and adolescence until eventually majoring in music.
My teaching method follows a similar path beginning organically with the student's knowledge and ear and then fortifying and training each through repeated exposure and practice of essential concepts. This holds for harmony, theory, and ear-training.
As for improvisation, I do not teach patterns or the "paint by numbers" approach. My model is based on developing a solid grasp of both phrasing and harmony, and training a nimble ear to navigate the essential balance between the two.
Less suitable for complete beginners, improvisation and jazz theory lessons are geared for those who have, at minimum, acquired keyboard fundamentals and begun to build repertoire. New to jazz is not an issue! Harmony, theory, and ear-training are available to all levels.
