Every drawing builds on a handful of foundational techniques you can practise from day one.

• Line and contour: this is how you define the edges of a subject, from smooth curves to sharp angles.
• Shape and proportion: breaking any subject into simple shapes (circles, rectangles, triangles) helps you capture its overall structure before adding detail.
• Tone and shading: shading turns flat shapes into solid forms by showing where light hits and where shadow falls.
• Perspective: one-point and two-point perspective are the most common systems beginners learn.
• Composition: composition is how you arrange elements on the page to guide the viewer's eye.

Working with a tutor speeds up progress because they correct habits before they become ingrained.

Drawing tutors in Doncaster typically charge $20/h per hour.

The cost depends on:

• Your current level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
• The instructor's credentials and portfolio
• The package you choose (casual or regular)
• The lesson format (online, at home, at the tutor's studio)

Comparing several profiles helps you find the best fit for your budget and artistic goals.

Self-taught artists succeed when they follow a clear plan instead of sketching randomly.

• Start with basic exercises: practise drawing straight lines, circles and ellipses to build hand control.
• Draw from observation: set up everyday objects and sketch what you actually see, not what you think they look like.
• Follow a curriculum: working through lessons sequentially builds skills that reinforce each other.
• Sketch daily: keeping a sketchbook habit turns drawing into second nature.

That said, a tutor can spot mistakes you might not notice on your own and help you progress faster.
