Find your design tutor in Robertson

Graphic design can absolutely be self-taught, but it helps to follow a clear path rather than jumping between random tutorials.

• Learn the fundamentals first, including layout, colour theory, and typography, before touching any software.
• Practise with free tools such as Figma or Canva, which let you experiment without expensive software licences.
• Study real examples by breaking down logos, posters, and websites you admire to see what makes them effective.
• Build a small portfolio early on, even with practice briefs, so you can track your progress over time.

A design tutor can tailor lessons to your goals, whether that's branding, UI, or print.

The average cost of graphic design lessons in Robertson is around $25/h.

The cost can vary based on:

• Whether you're a complete beginner or already have some experience
• The tutor's experience and design background
• The length and frequency of your lessons
• How the lessons are delivered, in person or via video call

Many tutors offer a discounted rate for block bookings to help lower the overall cost.

Good graphic design usually comes down to a handful of core principles that guide every layout.

• Balance distributes visual weight evenly across a layout so nothing feels lopsided.
• Contrast highlights important content by making it visually distinct from the rest.
• Hierarchy guides the eye to the most important information first, then the rest.
• Alignment and repetition create consistency, tying separate elements together into one cohesive design.

Personalised feedback from a tutor helps you apply these principles with confidence.
