Book guitar lessons with expert teachers

The first lessons for a new guitarist cover the physical setup and basic playing techniques.

• Parts of the instrument: Know the nut and other key components to discuss technique.
• String identification: Memorise standard tuning names to understand chord diagrams.
• Fretting technique: Keep your thumb behind the fretboard while fingers arch over strings.
• Strumming basics: Hold a pick between your index finger and strum from top to bottom with fluid arm movement.

Master these essentials first to avoid poor technique that become hard to fix.

Guitar lessons in Devonport typically cost around $32/h per hour.

Pricing varies based on multiple criteria:

• The learner's experience (intermediate, or high school level)
• The instructor's experience (degrees and certifications)
• The format chosen (60-minute sessions, fortnightly)
• The teaching format (online via video call)

Some instructors offer discounted packages when you book multiple sessions, which lowers the per-lesson cost.

Also called the Pareto Principle, this concept shows that specific exercises yields disproportionate results.

Apply this by targeting specific challenges that improve overall playing.

Core 20% activities:

• Clean chord changes between basic shapes like G-C-D or E-A-B
• Even tempo control using rhythmic exercises
• Mastering basic scales in one position first
• Recognising intervals to play by ear

This approach maximises practice efficiency by targeting the skills that unlock the most songs.
