Book guitar lessons with expert teachers

The first lessons for a beginner cover parts of the instrument and basic playing techniques.

• Guitar anatomy: Know the headstock and other critical elements to communicate clearly.
• String identification: Standard tuning assigns particular pitches to each open string: E-A-D-G-B-E.
• Finger placement: Press strings firmly close to the fret wire using your fingertips.
• Basic strumming: Hold a pick between your thumb and strum through all strings with a relaxed wrist.

These basic skills prepare beginners for building technique within early lessons.

Also called Pareto's Law, this concept shows that focused practice yields disproportionate results.

For guitarists, this means prioritising key techniques like chord changes rather than trying to learn too much.

Examples of high-impact practice:

• Clean chord changes between basic shapes like G-C-D or E-A-B
• Steady rhythm patterns using a metronome
• Mastering basic scales in one position first
• Listening skills to play by ear

Remember that the vital 20% vary by skill level, so adjust your focus as you develop.
