Find your painting tutor in Clayton

Learning to paint on your own is absolutely possible with the right approach and consistent practice.

• Select a medium: watercolour or acrylic paints are ideal starting points before moving to oils.
• Think in shapes and values: train your eye to see light, shadow, and form rather than just outlines.
• Master colour mixing: a small palette of primary colours teaches you far more than a full set ever could.
• Practise composition: learn basic rules such as the rule of thirds to make your paintings visually balanced and engaging.

Following these steps consistently leads to real improvement — and a qualified tutor can make the journey even more rewarding.

Painting tutors in Clayton typically charge $30/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

• The level of study and your learning goals
• The teacher's expertise and artistic background
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• Where the sessions take place

Most teachers offer a trial lesson so you can test their teaching style before committing.

Every painting follows a series of stages that guide the artist from a blank canvas to a finished work.

• Setting up: before any painting begins, the surface is prepared with a ground or wash to create a stable base.
• Initial lay-in: the main forms and light/dark relationships are sketched in with diluted paint, mapping out the painting.
• Layering: the artist refines shapes and adds texture and nuance through multiple passes of paint.
• Finishing and touch-ups: final details, highlights, and corrections are made to bring the painting to completion.

A skilled painting tutor can walk you through each stage in real time, helping you understand not just what to do, but why.
