Find your painting tutor in Victoria Park

Learning to paint on your own is absolutely possible with the right approach and consistent practice.

• Select a medium: watercolour or acrylic paints are ideal starting points before moving to oils.
• Think in shapes and values: train your eye to see light, shadow, and form rather than just outlines.
• Start with a limited palette: working with just a few colours helps you understand colour mixing without feeling overwhelmed.
• Study composition: understanding how to arrange elements on your canvas is just as important as technique.

Following these steps consistently leads to real improvement — and a qualified tutor can make the journey even more rewarding.

In Victoria Park, expect to pay about $28/h for an hour of painting tuition.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• The level of study and your learning goals
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The package you choose (one-off or regular sessions)
• Where the sessions take place

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining highly effective.

Every painting follows a series of stages that guide the artist from a blank canvas to a finished work.

• Setting up: before any painting begins, the surface is prepared with a ground or wash to create a stable base.
• Initial lay-in: the main forms and light/dark relationships are sketched in with diluted paint, mapping out the painting.
• Building layers: paint is applied in successive layers, adding detail, depth, and colour variation as the work develops.
• Refinement: the artist reviews the whole work and makes small adjustments to colour, edges, and focal points.

A skilled painting tutor can walk you through each stage in real time, helping you understand not just what to do, but why.
