FAQs

What age is appropriate for children to start swimming lessons?

It is generally recommended that children start swimming lessons around the age of 4. At this age, they are typically developmentally ready to learn basic swimming skills and water safety. However, every child is unique, and some may be ready for lessons earlier or later than others. It is always a good idea to consult with a swim instructor to determine the best time for your child to start lessons.

Kids and swimming lessons go hand in hand! Confidence around the water is such a key part of life at any age and a program that permits kids entry to the water is so important from any level for their safety and fun. Swimming classes give a parent and kids alike peace of mind, and the element of safety around pools as well as fun in the water is one of the best ways to save years of hassle later.

Speaking of years, there are even aquatic and swimming skills in safe water programs that children can start to learn from as young an age as 6 months old, at a local swimming centre or even with private classes or group lessons in a backyard pool with a qualified instructor and parent supervision.

Overall, there are more benefits of swimming lessons for kids year after year and that can benefit learning and fitness in and out of the pool. A learn-to-swim program for kids can help them with the concept of learning generally, such as in maths classes, and can also take a great view to fitness throughout the years as a child progresses through levels.

What will your child learn during their swimming lessons?

The lessons will typically take a big safety focus and bring children into contact with the water throughout the program, and as they move up the levels at swim school, lesson after lesson will focus more on fitness and swimming skills like speed and endurance with teachers also giving coaching advice and giving more free time. These later lessons can also take place at various pools around the city, as different locations may offer different facilities.

To start with, class 1 through class 10 or so (whether in a holiday program or over a few months, assuming at least one class or two classes a week) will really be about bringing children into contact with the water. This means children of a very young age, maybe even babies, put their face under the water and being supported by a parent, then as a baby becomes a toddler, becoming more independent and free in their water contact time, and getting over apprehension they may have.

Beyond the baby levels, programs do tend to still focus on fun and swimming and learning development for those children aged slightly older than the baby level. Typically between the age of 3 and 7 years old, programs will spend time year after year (potentially tailored holiday programs too) classes will take place a couple of times a week for several months a year so that kids really can be independent near the water and in different kinds of pools, with each lesson having its centre around maintaining confidence and gradually increasing skills.

The years between 8 and 12 are generally when confidence has been acquired and skills are the main focus, and your child will take a view to being even more independent and even confident in the water. This is the level where in addition to free, monitored practice by a parent and teachers, students will really start to focus on strokes, pacing, and endurance, and may even start to consider what styles of swimming they like the most, or other aquatic activities in the pool like synchronised swimming or water polo, with a view to competition as well.

The benefits of swimming lessons for children

As we've outlined, the goals are confidence, independence, and safety around the water, whether that be on holiday at the beach, or in the various locations with pools around your city.

There can really be a lot of enjoyment taken from the classes and it can be a fantastic way for parent and child bonding, as well as a way for kids to make friends outside of school and expand their social skills. In fact, many parents and children do report that swimming lessons with children from a young age in particular show not only the obvious benefits long term of being able to swim confidently and apply water safety but the variety added to the weekly routine of the lessons makes kids and parents more engaged in their hobbies.

In terms of what the practical details of classes are, the actual breathing techniques that are some of the first things to be learnt have health benefits for individuals not only in the sense that they improve air retention in the lungs, but teach pupils how to pace themselves and their breathing, especially during exercise, and how this can have overall benefits. It also promises great possibilities for the parasympathetic nervous system since the out breath is directly connected to this, and is a reason that many people cite swimming as the reason for their calmness and happiness, given the increased rates of serotonin that it can bring.

Beyond this, there are obviously the technical elements of learning the strokes and movements that propel you through the water, principally freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke, and butterfly, but we'll leave this up to the swimming teachers you'll find on Superprof for your kids swimming classes to explain!
