About REX

Hello! I'm a warm, open-hearted native Mandarin speaker from Shanghai, and I'm excited to help you on your language journey.

My biggest passion is seeing my students succeed. I have a strong track record of helping learners build real confidence, having successfully guided 5 of my students from the very beginning all the way to passing their HSK exams.

Patience and clarity are at the heart of my teaching. As a part-time machine learning mentor for kids, I specialise in breaking down complex topics into simple, easy-to-understand steps. I believe learning should be an enjoyable and encouraging process. Our lessons will be a welcoming space for conversation, questions, and celebrating your progress together.

And, with my Master's degree from Imperial College's Business School, I am also a great resource if you need to navigate professional or business settings in Mandarin. Whether you're learning for daily chats or for boardroom meetings, I'd love to help you reach your goals

About the lesson

About the Lesson
My teaching is all about you! Every lesson is versatile and completely tailored to your personal goals and learning style. My main goal is to make learning Mandarin feel natural, enjoyable, and effective.

Here’s what you can expect from our journey together:

1. Our First Chat & Personalised Plan
We'll start with a friendly conversation to assess your current level of Chinese and, most importantly, understand your motivations and goals. From there, we will discuss and create a learning plan that is a perfect fit for you.

2. A Typical Lesson Flow

Preparation: Before our session, I’ll send you some materials to look over. This helps you feel familiar with the topic so we can spend more of our time actively practicing together.

Practice: During the lesson, we’ll dive into practical vocabulary, master key grammar points, and perfect your pronunciation and tones. We'll do this through fun, interactive exercises and lots of real conversation.

Application: The most important part? You will leave each session feeling more confident and ready to use what you’ve learned in real-life situations.

Review

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience had by the students of REX.

Perfect! I was initially struggling with getting the pronounciations correct, but Rex provided great advice on how to read the characters quickly. Helping me notice the small differences between similiar characters. Highly recommend!

I would certainly recommend Rex as a tutor! He is encouraging and friendly whilst also really helpful in clearly explaining grammar points and sentence structures. He plans lessons very well and I always felt supported to try writing and talking about challenging topics as his feedback was always given in a supportive and caring way. I found him invaluable in learning to write new words and pronouncing them too! In summary, I learnt a lot with Rex in a supportive environment.

Rex is one of the kindest and most genuine people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I first met him whilst playing handball at university, and what first struck me was his compassion and willingness to make sure people felt welcome and included into the club. Ever since then he’s been an important part of my life, and always someone I know I can rely on.
