Clayton “Xale” Slusser is a Los Angeles–based professional woodwind performer, educator, arranger, and reed crafting specialist with extensive experience across orchestral, jazz, theatrical, chamber, studio recording, and freelance performance environments. A multi-instrumentalist specializing in double reeds and woodwind doubling, Xale performs throughout Southern California with a variety of ensembles, productions, and community arts organizations while also maintaining an active private teaching studio.

Lessons focus not only on technical development, but also musicianship, confidence, creativity, and practical real-world musical skills.
Beyond teaching and performing, Xale is also deeply involved in reed crafting, music technology, arranging, notation, and modern online music education, blending traditional musicianship with contemporary tools and personalized instruction tailored to each student’s goals and learning style.

Lesson Rates & Policies
My lesson rate is $50 per lesson, and I teach exclusively in 60-minute lesson blocks. Whether you’re studying bassoon, piano, or another woodwind instrument, my goal is to provide focused, individualized instruction that helps you develop both strong technique and a lifelong appreciation for music.
In-Person Lessons
I am based in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, and primarily travel using LA Metro, Metro Micro, and walking. In-person lessons are available for an additional $20 travel fee. Students should either:
* Live near a major Metro rail, BRT, or Metro Micro service area, or
* Be able to travel to my home studio in Eagle Rock.
I work with students throughout Los Angeles County whenever practical. For students located farther away, I often recommend a hybrid format: one in-person lesson per month supplemented by weekly online lessons.
Online Lessons I teach students throughout the United States and internationally via online lessons. Many students find that a combination of consistent weekly instruction and regular practice produces excellent results regardless of location.
Commitment & Practice Expectations I strongly encourage weekly lessons, as consistency is one of the most important factors in musical growth.
Students and parents will be asked to sign a simple practice agreement. The purpose is not to create pressure, but to establish a commitment to regular practice and steady progress. Lessons are most rewarding when students arrive prepared and ready to build on the work they’ve done during the week.
My Teaching Philosophy I teach more than notes, fingerings, and rhythms. I teach artistry.
Whether you plan to major in music, play in your school ensemble, perform professionally, or simply enjoy music as a lifelong hobby, my goal is to help you become a confident, expressive musician who loves making music. Technical skills matter, but developing a lasting appreciation for music matters just as much.
In short: love it for life, and learn to do it well.
