About Ray

I hold an undergraduate degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science, a discipline that sits at the intersection of advanced mathematics, probability and real-world problem solving. Actuarial science is one of the most mathematically demanding undergraduate programs available, and completing it means I have not just studied statistics and calculus, I have applied them under pressure at a level that goes well beyond the standard curriculum.
That depth of training is what I bring into every tutoring session. When you are stuck on a concept in precalculus, calculus or statistics, I am not searching my memory for something I half-remember. I understand the full landscape of where these topics lead and why they are built the way they are, which means I can explain not just how to solve a problem but why the method works and where it connects to everything else.
I also know that having advanced knowledge means very little if you cannot communicate it clearly. My sessions are structured around your specific sticking point, explained in plain language, worked through step by step until the concept belongs to you rather than just to the textbook. I do not measure success by whether you sat through an hour with me, I measure it by whether you can walk into your next assessment with genuine confidence.
If you are looking for a tutor who has done the work at the highest level and can bring that down to where you are right now, you are in the right place.

My approach to teaching mathematics is built on one core belief: no student is bad at math, they have simply been taught to memorize rather than understand. Every session I run starts by diagnosing exactly where the confusion lives, because a student struggling with calculus is often actually struggling with an algebra gap they never got to fix. Once we locate the real problem, we build from there using worked examples, pattern recognition and deliberate practice rather than drilling formulas that disappear after the exam.
A typical lesson begins with a quick review of where we left off or what the student is currently stuck on, then we work through the concept together with me explaining the reasoning behind each step rather than just the mechanics. After that the student attempts similar problems independently while I observe, and we close with a summary of what was learned and a small assignment to reinforce it before the next session.
What sets me apart is that I am close enough to the curriculum to know exactly what trips students up. I am not teaching from a position of someone who learned this thirty years ago, I understand the pressure of the modern math classroom and I tailor sessions to what actually shows up in your assessments. My sessions are direct, efficient and structured around your specific goal, whether that is passing an upcoming exam, improving your grade or genuinely understanding the subject for the first time.
These lessons are suited for high school students in precalculus, university students taking introductory calculus or statistics courses, and anyone who needs to build a stronger mathematical foundation before advancing in STEM, business or data-related fields.
