About Maia

Kia Orana,

I'm a Physics and Mathematics graduate from the University of Otago with 5+ years of tutoring experience. I've worked with students across a wide range of ages and abilities, from primary school through to NCEA Level 3.

I mainly tutor mathematics and physics, but I'm also happy to help with chemistry and general science.

I've always really enjoyed tutoring because I like helping people get their head around things that initially seem difficult. Everyone learns differently, so I try to explain things in a way that actually makes sense to the student rather than just showing them a formula or method and moving on.

I've worked with students who need a bit of extra help to keep up at school, as well as students who are already doing well and want to push themselves further. I'm also happy to help with specific topics, upcoming assessments and exams, or provide more regular support throughout the year.

Physics: General science – NCEA Level 3
Chemistry: Primary school – NCEA Level 3
General Science: Primary school – NCEA Level 1

About the lesson

I don't have a set lesson plan that I use for everyone. I'll normally start by finding out what the student is working on, what they're finding difficult and what they'd like to improve.

From there, lessons can be as structured or flexible as needed. We can work through topics the student is struggling with, prepare for upcoming assessments, go through past papers, catch up on gaps from previous years or work ahead of what's currently being taught at school.

We will also practice problem solving and exam technique while building confidence.

I recommend a minimum time of 60-minute lessons, although longer sessions can work well for older students, particularly around NCEA exams. For younger students I find that 60-minutes is a good balance.

Details

Please note that Superprof often advertises a free first lesson, but I don't offer a completely free hour. Instead, I can offer a 45-minute introductory session for $30. This gives us a chance to meet, talk about what you're looking for and see whether I'm the right tutor for you before booking regular lessons.

My standard rate is $45/hour.

Travel will be an additional $5 depending on location around Dunedin.
