I ask all of my students what they want to know, then what they know so far. I break down step by step where the student is to find where to start from. Once I learn about how someone learns, visually, through audio, etc; I can guide them to understand the concepts they need with analogies. In the end I make sure they can repeat back in their own words the concept, simply, to ensure they know what they learned.
