About Stephen

Stephen has over a decade of directing experience in TV and film. Most recent credits include McDonald & Dodds for Mammoth Screen/ITV, critically acclaimed series London Kills (BBC/Acorn TV) and Fifteen-Love (World Productions/Amazon UK).

Mentored by BAFTA and DGA award winning director Peter Hoar, as part of the Directors UK Inspire Mentor Scheme, Stephen has directed the likes of Aidan Turner, Olivia Colman and Jason Watkins.

Stephen's most recent award-winning short Harold & Mary, starring the wonderful Dermot Crowley & Phyllis Logan, had a very successful run at various BIFA and BAFTA qualifying festivals and has been released through Shorts TV. Stephen currently has two short films in the festival circuit, Blackpool and The Stork, both of which have been selected for BAFTA qualifying festivals.

Having worked his way up to Director from starting out as a floor runner, he has a grounded and hard-working ethic and can give invaluable knowledge of the workings and challenges of a set. From the ongoing demands of production and scheduling through to remaining creative, authentic and committing to the narrative; Stephen can provide coaching in both performance and career development within the industry.

His focus and interests are in crime and socio-political dramas and intriguing, complex thrillers. He’s a Blackpool lad at heart, but lives in London and will go wherever the work takes him.

About the lesson

My aim is to teach students not just to help pass exams but to understand the industry they're trying to break into. Typical lessons will be around an hour. If they want to learn about specific aspects of the industry, directing, AD'ing, how a set runs then I will tailor the lesson to them specifically. Giving each person a bespoke lesson based on their needs. If I am teaching screenwriting, I will start with the basics of writing and then hope to build on it from there so that the student can hone their skills as a writer and understand what makes a great story. We will talk about IP and how to create your own work. My lessons are for anyone who is looking to break into the industry, or who wants a place to refine their skills and talk about their next steps.
