About Dr Alexis

I am an economist and lecturer with nearly a decade of teaching experience at some of Europe’s most prestigious universities, including the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, and Sciences Po.

My teaching and research span economics, econometrics, behavioural science, and development economics, and I have consistently been recognised for both academic excellence and outstanding teaching performance.

I previously served as a full-time lecturer at the University of Oxford (2018–2020) and have taught across Oxford, LSE, and Sciences Po since 2016. My roles have included Stipendiary Lecturer in Economics at St Edmund Hall (Oxford), Class Teacher in the LSE Economics Department, and instructor for a graduate econometrics course within Oxford’s History Faculty.

Across these positions, I have helped students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels master complex material in microeconomics, econometrics, and applied research methods.

My academic journey has been shaped by sustained excellence. I was awarded a competitive, performance-based full scholarship to pursue my MPhil and DPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford, where I completed my PhD in 2018 on the relationship between social comparisons and ethical behaviour.

Prior to Oxford, I achieved the best overall exam performance in my cohort at Durham University and received the prize for the best undergraduate dissertation, scoring 93/100. Throughout my teaching career, I have received multiple commendations, including bonuses for outstanding teaching at LSE and exceptionally positive feedback for my MSc econometrics lectures at Oxford.

My approach combines rigorous analytical training with clear, intuitive explanation, helping students build both confidence and technical mastery in economics and econometrics.

Student reviews:

"Dr. Grigorieff goes through the tough concepts and makes it much easier to understand. I only understand what was taught in the lecture after attending the classes.”

“I think Alexis is very well prepared for the class and has a genuine passion for teaching."

"He makes an effort to involve everyone in class. Alexis also places great emphasis on concepts that are important to our study which is really helpful.”

"Excellent teacher, great chap!”

“Engaging, smiley, look forward to his classes. One of the best teachers at LSE.”

“I think he is extremely good at making the classes intellectually stimulating and engaging, and does an excellent job at providing clarity on difficult subjects.”

“Great teacher, very good at simplifying things so we understand.”

“He is very good at explaining in simple language which helps us to understand better.”

“Finally, a really good class teacher at LSE!”

Student feedback from Sciences Po:

“The teacher, his teaching style, explained everything very well - overall a great experience, great teaching. THANK YOU!”

“The professor explained the complex notions in a very understandable way, and he was always ready to elaborate on topics as well as answer every question. I enjoyed his way of teaching as it was exciting and relevant to real-life examples.”

“Alexis was great at accommodating for the varying levels of knowledge in the class. We were able to ask questions and never felt like our answers were dumb which gave us the confidence to keep asking questions. He was very approachable and helpful with answering our questions and creating a positive atmosphere.”

“This was one of the best courses I had this semester. We were provided with all the learning material and powerpoint presentations in advance and everything was clearly explained.”

“Excellent statistics course. As someone who chose to study politics to escape mathematics, I dreaded this course but the teacher made this an excellent experience. Professor Grigorieff explained all the concepts of STATA in a very clear and concise way, and was incredibly patient with the students.”

“I surprised myself by absolutely loving this course. The professor is SUPERB. He was extremely well prepared for each class, with a crystal clear train of thought allowing him to explain the concepts, but also extremely flexible to adapt to our constant questions. He included everyone and made sure we all understood. Additionally, having problem sets throughout the semester was really helpful, because we got almost real-time feedback on our learning, which was reinforced by doing the problem sets. I can’t say enough good things about this class and its instructor. Outstanding!”

“A professor that inspired me and made me believe in me"

I have over nine years of university-level teaching experience across three world-leading institutions: the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics (LSE), and Sciences Po.

My teaching has spanned undergraduate and postgraduate courses in economics, econometrics, behavioural science, and applied quantitative methods, combining rigorous academic training with a clear and supportive teaching style.

University Teaching Roles:

Lecturer in Economics, University of Oxford (2018–2020) - Served as a full-time lecturer responsible for delivering core economics and econometrics courses. Designed lectures, supervisions, problem sets, and assessments for both undergraduate and MSc students. Received exceptionally strong student evaluations for clarity, depth of explanation, and approachability.

Stipendiary Lecturer in Economics, St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford (2016–2018) - Taught microeconomics, behavioural economics, and quantitative methods to Oxford undergraduates. Provided small-group tutorials, exam preparation, and academic mentoring.

Teaching Associate and Class Teacher, London School of Economics (2016–2025) - Delivered classes in microeconomics, applied econometrics, and behavioural economics. Received several performance bonuses for outstanding teaching, awarded on the basis of student evaluations and departmental review.

Class Teacher, Sciences Po (2016–2025) - Taught economics and quantitative methods to undergraduate students, supporting their development in data analysis, economic reasoning, and academic writing.

Graduate Course Instructor, University of Oxford (2018–2025) - Taught a graduate-level econometrics course within Oxford’s History Faculty for the MSc in Economic and Social History. Received overwhelmingly positive feedback for lecture structure, practical econometric guidance, and the accessibility of complex material.

Teaching Methodology:

I foster an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, testing ideas, and developing strong academic independence.

I focus on exam-style teaching, resonating strongly with the notion that the best teaching is directly attacking the assessment method.

Education & Academic Distinctions:

DPhil (PhD) in Economics, University of Oxford — Awarded a performance-based full scholarship.

MPhil in Economics, University of Oxford — Scholarship recipient.

Undergraduate Degree, Durham University — Best overall exam performance; Prize for best dissertation (93/100).
