About Kali

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Songwriting from the University of Sussex and a Master’s in Popular Music Practice (Composition) from BIMM University. I have taught at BIMM, delivering lectures in songwriting and music production, and provided live piano accompaniment for production lessons to support students’ creative exploration.

As a composer, I’ve collaborated with professional string quartets on my pieces Soundwaves and Morning. My passion for film music, sound design, and sonic storytelling inspired me to launch my own music production business, specialising in composition and foley sample packs.

I have experience working with large ensembles, including performing as a session vocalist with Choir Noir at Wembley Arena. Through my work with Wilder Vocals in recording studios, I’ve gained valuable insight into arranging and harmonising for recorded music. I’ve also collaborated with choirs such as The Women’s Collective and BIMM Bristol Choir, developing a deep understanding of vocal ensembles across various styles and genres.

With formal teaching training as part of my academic background, an advanced DBS check, and certification as a Mental Health First Aider, I prioritise creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Drawing from my experience in teaching, session work, performance and production, I offer creative, tailored lessons for students of all ages and skill levels.

About the lesson

My goal is to equip you with the tools and techniques to express yourself creatively and write your own music. I offer lessons for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced, specialising in songwriting, composition, arrangement, orchestration, music theory, ear training, improvisation and lyric writing.

My lessons are designed to be fun, engaging and inspiring, while tailored to each student’s unique skill level and musical goals. I take a creative, flexible and hands-on approach, focusing on learning through practice. Sessions include workshopping original songs, exploring compositional techniques, and applying practical exercises to develop your musical voice.

Perfect! Having held a longstanding ambition to compose some music worthy of public performance, recent retirement gave me the time and motivation to undertake the project. From the outset Kali has been positive and supportive. She has provided access to many useful resources and I managed to transform a simple one-minute piece for piano into a choral work of five minutes that I’m really happy with.
While I’m now on the trail of a willing and able choir, I’ve been able to generate a number of motifs, phrases and passages that have advanced to the editing phase. Kali has given plenty of constructive feedback on what works, together with an understanding of some of the editing challenges. I’ve enjoyed this stage of the process greatly. We’re aiming to get back together when I’ve made sufficient progress towards a second composition.
The only element I was expecting, especially early on, was some more technical inputs, such as chord progressions. Having said that, we have acknowledged that creativity takes on many forms and not always following conventions (which suits me greatly!).
