About Jemma

I am a British student whos studied Chinese and Japanese at the University of Leeds. As a language student I am aware of the methods needed to learn a language and I know what works. I have tutored students who wanted to come to university in the UK and enabled them to achieve a very high score on their English proficiency exams, especially the IELTS academic (7.5-8.5). I am an avid reader and therefore have a wide vocabulary and cultural knowledge that I am committed to transmitting to my students alongside language learning.

About the lesson

My main emphasis is to teach natural English that will be useful in everyday life as well as the academic world. Unlike traditional teaching methods where different skills are covered separately (grammar, reading, listening, etc.) my approach consists of coordinating these different skills around a theme: each lesson covers a specific theme that not only enriches the learner's vocabulary by enabling them to talk about things they will have hands-on experience with in the future but also has the specificity of not being boring lengthy grammar classes. As a result, my lessons provide a fun and stimulating environment in which the student is involved in the process rather than passively listening. I especially like putting emphasis on oral expression, as it enables my students to absorb the content of the lesson faster while minimising the workload outside of the lesson. I usually teach one on one lessons that last for an hour but I am willing to be flexible to fit student's needs. I am happy to meet at a public place (library, cafe) for lessons and can accommodate couples, siblings, friends etc. learning together for group classes. I also teach online; I have a lot of experience with online teaching and am committed to making the lesson fun and engaging!
