About Yushi

Hello! I'm a native Mandarin speaker who has called the UK home for nine years, bringing a unique blend of Eastern wisdom and Western educational excellence to my teaching. My journey with cross-cultural communication began early - I started learning English at age 10, giving me deep insight into the language learning process from a student's perspective. My academic credentials reflect my commitment to both technical precision and creative expression. I hold a Master's degree in Engineering from UCL, demonstrating my analytical approach to problem-solving, and both a Master's degree and PhD in Humanities and Arts from the prestigious Royal College of Art, showcasing my cultural sensitivity and communication expertise. I have extensive tutoring experience at renowned institutions including the London College of Communication (LCC) and the Architectural Association (AA), where I've honed my ability to explain complex concepts clearly and adapt to diverse learning styles. This combination of technical and artistic education, paired with my bilingual fluency, allows me to teach Mandarin from multiple perspectives. What sets me apart is my patience and dedication to each student's success. I understand that learning a language is deeply personal, and I'm committed to creating a supportive, encouraging environment where you can thrive and build genuine confidence in Mandarin.

My teaching approach combines interactive conversation practice with structured grammar foundations, tailored to each student's goals and learning style. Having lived in the UK for 9 years, I understand the specific challenges English speakers face when learning Mandarin, from tonal pronunciation to character recognition. I use a communicative methodology that emphasises practical, real-world applications. Lessons typically include speaking practice, listening comprehension, character writing, and cultural context to make learning meaningful and memorable. I incorporate multimedia resources, role-playing scenarios, and personalised materials based on your interests - whether that's business Chinese, travel conversations, or preparing for HSK exams. Each lesson is typically 60 minutes, allowing enough time for comprehensive skill development while maintaining engagement. For intensive learners, I also offer 90-minute sessions. My native fluency combined with years of cross-cultural experience helps me explain complex grammar concepts clearly and bridge cultural nuances that textbooks often miss. I welcome learners of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced students seeking fluency or exam success. Whether you're learning for career advancement, travel, academic study, or personal enrichment, I adapt my teaching style to match your pace and objectives, ensuring steady progress in a supportive, encouraging environment.
