About Lais

I am a Brazilian-born Canadian recently arrived in Sao Paulo. Although I was born in Brazil, I have lived the majority of my life in Canada, where I attained my high school diploma, my undergraduate degree in Psychology, and a post-graduate degree in International Development. I have been exclusively teaching English since my arrival in Brazil (1 year) although I have been a facilitator and instructor for much longer, regularly conducting training sessions and workshops related to a variety of topics and targeted at native english-speaking and ESL adults ( 18+) and youth (12-18 years), using both traditional didactic tools as well as interactive, adult education learning tools (adapted from popular education methodology). In addition, I have significant experience as an English publisher (corporate and academic manuscripts - over 9 years of experience), as well as over 6 years of experience preparing grants / manuscripts / materials for large, internationally-recognized institutions, including governmental ministries, large international NGOs, and prominent research Institutions.

About the lesson

As for language development strategies, the one with an academic background in both international development and Psychology, I firmly believe in adapting strategies that fit the individualized needs of learners. This may include initial assessments of learning styles and proficiency, taking into consideration the weaknesses and strengths of the learner, as well as their preferences / goals (for instance, whether they are looking to work on their diction / public speaking, or motivated to become more proficient in writing for business / academic purposes). I believe that a strong feedback system can also help in strengthening the curriculum, which can be constantly adjusted to improve the learning process. Succinctly, I tend to adopt a dynamic approach to learning, often utilizing interactive / application-based tools that aid in retention and extrapolation of knowledge. At the end of the day, I believe that language acquisition should be pain-free, enjoyable experience for the learner, and my selection of methods will always reflect that! In particular as it pertains to language / English, my own personal experience learning in new languages and adapting to new cultures has taught me, and in view of current developmental findings related to language acquisition, I believe that successful language acquisition does not only encompass proficiency in grammar and syntax - it is equally important to contextualize the language for the learner, using situation-based scenarios that will enable the learner to gain more in-depth understanding of the nuances of the language.
