About Samantha

Hello! My name is Samantha, and I hope to be your new math-best-friend. Let me explain. :)

I used to hate math. It didn't make sense, it made my head spin, and it took forever. Now, I am a math major taking courses like Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics, and Calculus 3, and I plan on teaching high school math when I graduate. So, what changed? Did math suddenly "click" and become natural to me? Did someone wave a magic wand that made me adore math? Nope and nope. What changed was my attitude towards the challenge; I realized that asking for help is not a weakness but a valuable tool. I realized that I needed to understand the "why" behind the math problems I was solving, and sometimes I needed someone else to explain that "why." I also realized that I needed someone who cared and was invested in my success. That person is exactly who I hope to be for you.

Other things about me...
*I love anything outdoors (hiking, swimming, frisbee, etc.)
*I am a (slightly rusty) pianist
*Most of my time outside of school is spent:
a) reading at the park
b) nannying
c) catching up with friends

About the lesson

My highest priority is helping you, which means the following:

*If I don't understand a problem, I will go the extra mile to work through it and understand the "why" before we meet again.

*If I make a mistake, I will own it! There is nothing worse than a teacher who is "never wrong."

*I will send you any extra helpful resources I can find.

*If a topic is outside of my field of knowledge, I will tell you (the last thing I want to do is waste your time!). You then can decide if you would like to seek help elsewhere or stick with me to brave the learning trail together.

My sessions are virtual and laid back. Session 1 is a time to talk, get to know each other a bit, and discuss where you are having the most trouble with your math studies. We might even conquer some math problems right then and there! After I have a better understanding of where you are in your studies, I will do some preparation and practice of my own before meeting with you again. I want to make sure you are getting the best I can offer! Follow-up sessions will be tailored to your specific needs (and learning styles), which will be discussed in Session 1.

P.S. - A lot of students feel that they are just "bad at math," but I disagree. I think the real issue is that teachers are often simply "bad at teaching," or at least "bad at teaching with intentionality." Don't let your past experiences wear you down; you've got this!
