About Nicholas

- What kind of experience do you have? I have taught art and design history at Level 3 (A level) and Level 4 (undergraduate) for over twenty years and have lectured and delivered gallery education programmes at the Victoria & Albert Museum, The National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery. I also led the art, design and media provision at a major Further Education College in the South East and have consulted to both The Arts Council of England and the Design Council. I currently lecture at the University of Kent, am an examiner for a UK qualification provider and am completing my Ph.D at the University of York, an institution recently rated as 'outstanding' for its research in art history. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have held enhanced CRB and DBS certificates for many years. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? I am a member of the Association for Art History - Tell me about some of your current students. I have assisted many hundreds of students to achieve their academic and professional objectives and my former students now work at the highest levels of academic art history and at the cutting edge of the creative industries. My most recent student recently achieved an A* grade at A Level, was awarded her school's prize for art history and has subsequently gained a place to study the subject at her first choice Russell Group university.

With twenty years teaching the history of art at A level and on undergraduate courses, I can add significant value to exam performance while also helping develop the independent judgement and understanding needed for university study. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I have broad, current experience in the history of art and associated subjects at A Level and undergraduate level. I can also offer bespoke courses for individuals or groups, in art, design and architectural history to the level and depth of study that may be required either for personal development or for a specific purpose or event. - Tell me about your qualifications. BA hons. Fine Art and Art History, University for the Creative Arts (Maidstone College of Art) MA(RCA) History of Design, Royal College of Art Ph.D in the History of Art, University of York - current - How much do you charge? £50 per hour for tutoring, whether face to face or online, inclusive of preparation and marking. - Where do you teach? I can tutor face-to-face at any suitable location in Kent and East Sussex (Folkestone, Ashford, Hastings, Tenterden, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone) or at my own home on the Kent coast near Rye. I am also very happy to work within gallery and museum environments in London and the South East when appropriate. Travel to locations further afield, particularly Central and South London will always be considered, but given the time and cost of travelling to your location it's best to contact me directly to discuss your requirements. Online tutoring is available nationally and internationally to English speakers. - When are you available? Flexible within normal working hours, evenings and weekends. My academic research commitments are variable. - Which ages and levels do you teach? Primarily 16+, but there's certainly no upper limit and I have successfully tutored people of all ages. I can support those with no previous experience of studying humanities subjects through the whole A level curriculum, or offer more focused guidance to students looking to improve specific aspects of their study. I have considerable experience coaching those who wish to gain a place at a specific university or art college, including assisting students to prepare effective personal statements for UCAS. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? A Level Art History. Undergraduate History of Art, History of Design and Critical Theory. Contextual and Critical elements within Level 3 and Level 4 vocational qualifications in art and design. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. I'm very happy to tutor via Skype, email and other online media. I also have my own website to which I can upload resources that support teaching and learning. Online-only delivery is quite possible, and a combination of online and offline delivery can be tailored to meet individual needs. - Do you have a personal message for students? What qualities make some objects artworks and others not? Whose point of view is recorded by works of art, and who were the audiences who were originally intended to see them? How, and why, do artists make the choices they do? Why does style change? Why is discussion of art surrounded by so much jargon? Can art make us good, or even happy? I find these sorts of questions fascinating, and I hope you will too. Whatever your taste or interest in art, I can guarantee you'll encounter some extraordinary and beautiful things as you study and that your confidence in your own judgement and understanding, either as a viewer or a creator of art, will be significantly developed. I'll assist you to achieve an A level qualification that's well-respected by universities and if you are hoping to make the creative industries your career, you'll also gain some valuable insights into the sorts of choices and dilemmas that face all art-makers, as well as seeing what happens to creative works once they leave the studio and take on their a life of their own in society.
