About Gary
I work as a writer and journalist. My books include the novels The Oxford Despoiler ('The whole thing is a delight' - Sunday Telegraph) and All the Materials for a Midnight Feast ('A beautifully crafted work of fiction, graduating from a low-key opening into a real page-turner . . . one of the year's most impressive - and affecting - debuts' - Sunday Telegraph). I have appeared reciting poetry requests from memory on national radio and TV (Radio 4's Word of Mouth, Radio 2's Jeremy Vine programme, CBS TV, the Arte Channel and many other stations) and published a book of my experiences reciting poetry (The People's Favourite Poems, Old St 2018). I've worked as a cartoonist for the Spectator and have written for The Times, Guardian, Spectator and many other publications. I've also written the book 102 Ways to Write a Novel (2012) under the pseudonym Alex Quick. I'm friendly and helpful. I'm new on this site so here are some reviews from First Tutors:

I have published several novels with mainstream publishers and reviewed in broadsheets such as The Guardian, Times and Telegraph. I teach generally for an hour - you submit work in advance (no reading fee) and we look at it together during the lesson. Any level is welcome. I have taught novel-writing for twenty years and I have many student reviews - e.g. 'I started out with a kernel of an idea and a couple of half-baked chapters, and Gary's intelligent, probing questions and thoughtful feedback helped me workshop it into something I was excited to write and felt confident about.' - HK.
