About Dorian
I studied trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music Junior Department for two years, followed by three years at Trinity College of Music, London. After leaving music college I worked as a freelance trumpet player for eighteen years, with performance credits including Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond, Jamie Cullum, The Drifters and The Temptations, as well as in the orchestra pit of professional shows (both in the West End and touring) and appearances at the Albert Hall, the Festival Hall, and Glastonbury.
I have been teaching instrumental music lessons for over thirty years. During that time, I have taught across the primary and secondary school age, as well as adult pupils of all ages. I have successfully entered hundreds of pupils for exams, from grade 1 to diploma level (including the ABRSM, TCL and LCM exam boards). From 2014 I worked as a part-time brass teacher with Bradford Music and Arts Service for six years, including whole class teaching and working with pupils with special needs (learning difficulties and groups of hearing-impaired children).
After re-locating from Reading to West Yorkshire in 2006, I renewed my interest in composition and have composed and recorded the music for over 30 short films, animations & documentaries. I have around 200 tracks placed with library music companies, resulting in broadcast usage in the UK, USA, Canada, Norway, Portugal, Czech Republic, Finland, New Zealand & Singapore, including Sky 1, Sky 2, Discovery Channel, Lion TV, Living TV and Radio, including BBC 2 & BBC 1Xtra. In 2011 I successfully completed my ALCM in composition (as an external student with the London College of Music) and this was followed by an LLCM in 2012.
I have been an examiner for Pearson Education (formerly Edexcel) since 2002, initially marking GCSE Music, and then later AS and A2 Music Technology. In 2014 I was appointed to the examining panel for Trinity College London on the Rock and Pop syllabus.
Since 2011 I have been conducting choirs, including Chapel-en-le-Frith Ladies Choir (for seven years) and the Halifax Cube Choir (for two years). I am currently the musical director of Saddleworth Male Voice Choir, The Oldham Choir (SATB) and New Mill Male Voice Choir.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from April 2020 I moved all three of my choirs and (apart form a brief spell in the autumn of that year when face-to-face teaching was possible) all my teaching online. I have also entered pupils for online / digital exams during this period. I am an experienced and reliable freelance teacher and can confirm that I subscribe to the DBS.

I treat all of my pupils as individuals and the aim is always to help the student reach his / her full potential as a musician, on the chosen instrument. As well as work from a musical perspective, I also include technical work to ensure a student's physical method is as efficient as it can be, which will, in turn contribute to the musical elements in performance. We can work towards a specific goal (e.g., an exam, diploma or audition) or the lessons can just be fun. I also incorporate music theory work (related to the pieces being studied). I can offer lessons for all brass instruments (trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, tenor horn, French horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone and tuba), as well as jazz improvisation and composition.
