About Rachel

I am a UCLA and University of Oxford graduate with tutoring experience, including one year working with elementary school students and one year tutoring at the high school level. This experience has taught me how to adapt my approach to students of different ages, abilities, and levels of confidence.

I also work professionally as a writer, so reading, research, editing, and clear communication are skills I use every day. My academic background in history has given me extensive experience analyzing complex texts, developing arguments, conducting research, and communicating ideas clearly and effectively.

As a tutor, I am patient, encouraging, and attentive to each student's individual needs. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and telling me when something doesn't make sense. I take preparation seriously and tailor lessons to each student's goals, whether they need help with reading comprehension, essay writing, grammar, research, history, or a specific school assignment.

Most importantly, I want students to leave our sessions with a better understanding of the material and greater confidence in their ability to tackle it independently.

About the lesson

I believe the best tutoring is individualized: every student has different strengths, challenges, and ways of learning. My approach is patient, encouraging, and highly interactive. Instead of simply giving students answers, I help them understand how to work through a problem themselves, whether that means analyzing a difficult reading, organizing an essay, improving grammar and vocabulary, or developing a stronger argument.

A typical lesson begins by identifying what the student is currently working on and where they are struggling. From there, we might work through a reading assignment together, discuss its meaning and key ideas, develop an essay outline, revise a piece of writing, or practice specific English skills. I also focus on teaching strategies students can use independently, so that what they learn during tutoring carries over into their future assignments.

My academic background sets me apart as a tutor. I studied at both UCLA and the University of Oxford, with a strong emphasis on history, research, reading, and writing. Studying history at a high level requires much more than memorizing dates: it involves closely reading complex material, identifying important information, evaluating sources, constructing arguments, and communicating those arguments clearly. These are skills I can help students apply across English, history, and other reading- and writing-intensive subjects.

I can help with English reading comprehension, essay writing, grammar, vocabulary, editing, and general academic writing, as well as history and related humanities subjects. I am especially comfortable helping middle school and high school students, including students who feel overwhelmed by reading-heavy assignments or have difficulty turning their ideas into a well-organized paper.

My goal is not only to help students improve a particular assignment or grade, but to make reading and writing feel more manageable and give them greater confidence in their own abilities.
