About Charlotte
I'm Charlotte, a design historian, curator, and university professor specializing in fashion, material culture, and overlooked narratives in design history. I hold an MA from the Parsons/Cooper Hewitt History of Design and Curatorial Studies program and teach at both Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. My approach is rooted in rigorous research, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to making history relevant and engaging. As a curator, my recent work focuses on recovering the contributions of women designers, blending archival discovery with public scholarship and exhibition-making. Whether guiding a student through a research paper, a thesis, or a personal project, I bring patience, structure, and deep expertise—helping you build knowledge, critical insight, and confidence in your own academic and creative voice.

My lessons go beyond memorizing dates and styles — they are designed to show how design, fashion, and art history are living dialogues that shape our world today. We explore the social, cultural, and political contexts of visual culture, giving you the tools to think critically and write persuasively about material and visual culture.
In a typical session, we might analyze a specific designer's work, examine archival images, or discuss a key historical movement, connecting each topic to contemporary debates and your own interests. I emphasize discussion, close looking, and research-based inquiry, helping you build both knowledge and confidence in your analytical voice.
What sets me apart is my dual role as a university professor (Parsons/FIT) and a practicing curator and researcher. I bring first-hand archival insights, exhibition-making experience, and ongoing scholarly projects—such as my research on under-recognized women designers—directly into our sessions, offering you mentorship that bridges academia and the professional design world.
These lessons are ideal for university students in art or design history, emerging curators, designers seeking historical depth, or anyone passionate about deepening their understanding of fashion, material culture, and visual storytelling.

Perfect! As a distinguished scholar holding faculty positions at both Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, Professor Charlotte sets an exemplary standard in the teaching of art history, fashion history, and design history. Her courses are built upon a rigorous yet dynamic intellectual framework, enriched by her professional experience in museum curation, which allows her to infuse theoretical instruction with a tangible sense of materiality and spatial narrative.
In her classroom, history is never a static collection of facts, but an ongoing cultural dialogue. She masterfully interweaves garments, artistic movements, and social currents—from Renaissance textile motifs to modernist tailoring revolutions—guiding students to develop a critical historical consciousness. Her pedagogy embodies what might be termed "embodied knowledge transmission": through archival documents, visual analysis, and exhibition case studies, she makes history tactile, felt, and intellectually alive.
This object-based, culturally grounded approach not only deepens students' understanding of design evolution but also cultivates the ability to translate historical insight into contemporary creative language. Equally remarkable is her open and responsive teaching style—she listens thoughtfully to student perspectives, maintaining intellectual rigor while allowing room for dialogue and reflection.
If you wish to understand how fashion serves as a mirror of the human spirit across ages, or if you seek to anchor your creative practice in historical awareness and cultural orientation, Professor Charlotte’s class is an essential intellectual journey. She does not merely teach history—she teaches us how to see the future through the eyes of the past.Perfect! Charlotte was absolutely amazing, she is not only very skilled in fashion design, with her background, she knew exactly what I needed and where I was lacking when I am sketching out my design ideas, and when I am trying to design, she went into such detail teaching me about different fabrics and which would work for me. On top of this, she is funny and energetic, I am always excited to take her class!
Perfect! Professor Charlotte is a truly exceptional scholar-educator who masterfully integrates academic rigor with industry insight. As a seasoned professor teaching at both Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, her courses in art history, fashion history, and design history are marked by intellectual depth, structural clarity, and narrative power. Her background in museum work further enriches her teaching with a curatorial sensibility and a tangible connection to material culture.
In Professor Charlotte’s classroom, history is never a static collection of facts, but a living, breathing source of dialogue and inspiration. She skillfully situates garments, artistic movements, and design evolution within broader socio-cultural and aesthetic contexts, guiding students to develop critical vision and contextual thinking. From Renaissance textiles to contemporary sustainable fashion, she draws meaningful connections across time, helping students understand how history shapes the present and how the present rewrites history.
Her museum experience brings a distinctive curatorial and object-based approach to pedagogy. Through archival materials, visual analysis, and material case studies, she transforms historical knowledge into something tangible, felt, and intellectually engaging. This object-driven, history-anchored methodology not only solidifies theoretical foundations but also cultivates a profound sense of historical perspective and humanistic reflection in how students perceive art and design.
If you seek to understand fashion and art as mirrors of the human spirit across time, and if you wish to ground your creative practice in historical awareness and theoretical intentionality, Professor Charlotte’s teaching offers an indispensable journey of thought. She doesn’t just teach history—she teaches how to think with history. That is the mark of a truly great scholar and mentor.Perfect! Charlotte communicated with clarity and warmth, and her message felt very thoughtful. She made the art history learning process feel engaging and personalized, and I appreciated how well everything was explained from the beginning.
