About Archie

I LOVE math (FUN!)! I have loved math since I was in second grade. I loved math so much that in my senior year in high school, I took AP Calculus AB and BC at the same time, and then majored in math in college, and went on to grad school to learn as much math as I could!

I earned my bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a minor in computer science) from the University of San Diego (USD) and my masters (M.A.) and doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in mathematics from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). I have been tutoring students since I was in high school, including students from Coronado High School, La Jolla Country Day School, USD, SDSU, UCSD, and Australia (online)!

I am currently (school year 2022-2023) teaching (Pre-Algebra) and subbing (Pre-Algebra through Calculus) at Art of Problem Solving Academy. I am also currently teaching (Statistics) (also taught Precalculus and AP Calculus AB last school year) at Southern California Yeshiva High School.

I was an Adjunct Professor at San Diego Mesa College, where I taught Pre-Algebra, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, Trigonometry, College and Matrix Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I/II/III, Discrete Mathematics, Introduction to Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

I have also taught at the local universities. At SDSU, I taught Fundamentals of Mathematics, Intermediate Algebra, Topics in Mathematics, Introduction to Linear Algebra, History of Mathematics, and Algebraic Structures. At UCSD, I taught Calculus for Science and Engineering II. At USD, I taught Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Calculus I/II, and Applied Mathematics for Science and Engineering I/II.

When I was in grad school, I was a TA for Introduction to Differential Equations, Number Theory, and Partial Differential Equations.

About the lesson

25+ years tutoring experience (in-person and online; many through Wyzant [wyzant d o t com/Tutors/DoctorrTutor]); 10+ years teaching experience.
My approach to tutoring is the Socratic method, which is the use of open-ended questions to engage a student in discussion and guide the student towards some kind of insight. I keep my explanations clear, minimal, and to the point. I guide the student in doing most of the explaining. What sets me apart as a tutor is my broad knowledge plus length of experience in tutoring and teaching various math classes such as Pre-/Beginning/Intermediate/College Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, Calculus I/II/III, Discrete Math, Linear/Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations, Number Theory, and History of Math, and quantitative portions of standardized tests.
