About Fred
I'm Fred, and I've spent a long time now with a pair of sticks in my hands. People sometimes assume drumming is the loud, flashy corner of music, and I understand why — but the longer I've played, the more I've come to feel it's actually the oldest and most human corner of it. Rhythm came before melody, before instruments, before any of it; it's the thing our bodies already understand. A heartbeat is a rhythm. Walking is a rhythm. In a way, none of us are really starting from zero when we sit down at a kit — we're just learning to do on purpose what we've been doing without thinking our whole lives.
That belief shapes how I teach. I'm not in a hurry to turn you into a showpiece, and I don't measure progress by how fast or fancy you can get. What I care about is feel — that deep, satisfying sense of locking into time that you experience in your whole body rather than your head. Even after all these years, that feeling is still what keeps me playing. It hasn't worn off, and I doubt it ever will. If I can hand you even a little of that, I'll consider the job well done.
So I teach patiently, and without making anyone feel foolish for where they're starting. I've worked with plenty of people who arrived convinced they had "no rhythm," and almost none of them turned out to be right — they'd just never been given the time and encouragement to find it. The folks who give up on drumming usually aren't lacking some natural gift; more often they were rushed, or made to feel clumsy, or pushed toward complicated things before the simple ones felt good. I'd much rather make sure that doesn't happen to you.
Whatever's drawn you to the drums — a lifelong itch to play, the pull of a particular kind of music, or just the simple, physical fun of hitting things in time — I'd be glad to sit in the room with you and help you find your groove.

I like to begin by understanding what you're actually after, because the right path looks completely different from one person to the next. Are you dreaming of playing along with a band one day? Drumming purely for your own enjoyment, to blow off steam after a long week? Curious where rhythm might take you with no fixed destination in mind? There's no wrong answer here — I just want to know where you're headed so the work we do leads somewhere you genuinely want to go.
From there we build from the ground up, and on the drums that ground really is everything. We'll spend real, unhurried time on dependable timekeeping and on getting your hands and feet to cooperate comfortably, because that's the foundation the whole instrument stands on. I know it isn't the glamorous part — but a steady, relaxed sense of time is exactly what makes everything that comes later feel natural instead of frantic. And we'll get there by actually playing, often alongside music you love, so it never drifts away from the reason you picked up the sticks in the first place.
I try to be honest and gentle in equal measure, too. When something needs work, I'll tell you plainly — but kindly, and always with a clear, doable thing to focus on next rather than a vague "just keep at it." Real progress behind a kit isn't about huge bursts of effort anyway; it's about small, regular, encouraging steps that quietly add up. Part of my role is to guide those steps, and part of it is simply keeping you feeling capable and motivated enough to keep taking them.
But mostly I want you to enjoy yourself, and I don't think that's a soft or secondary thing. The people who stay with an instrument for life are almost always the ones who found it genuinely fun along the way. So we'll keep the mood relaxed, celebrate the wins however small, and move at a pace that lets you actually savor each new groove as it clicks into place. Wherever you're starting, and however far you decide to take it, I'd love to help you build a relationship with the drums that lasts.
