About Sophie

The final year of my bachelor's degree began through the Erasmus exchange program at King’s
College London. During my 6 months at that institution, I perfected my fluency in English language
while engaging and learning about the British educational system. Through my education minor, I
had the opportunity to intern as a teacher’s assistant at Ampere elementary school. However, my
experiences in education are not limited to those. For three years, I provided private lessons in
French as a foreign language, French literature, English, and history-geography to students of all
levels (handicapped included).
After those experiences, I participated in an FLE teacher-training program at Tours Langues for a
month, where I had the opportunities to learn about the CEFR, set up a sequence, observe the
different techniques, and organize various activities. Those experiences served to consolidate my
knowledge of teaching French as a foreign language, as well as my ability to understand students
from different cultures.
In addition, my experiences as an Assistant Director, health assistant (nurse) and camp counsellor
at summer camps allowed me to develop a good relationship with others, a team spirit, leadership
skills, and efficiency as well as rigour. In these winter and summer camps, I had to manage more
than a hundred children per camp while creating activities, organizing and supervising physical
exercises (ski, horse-riding, hiking, etc..).
Following my internship with “Tour Langues”, I started my double diploma; a Master degree in
French Foreign Language with University Paris 10 and in a meantime, a PGCE with University of
Birmingham. The first year was in France where I delved deeper into the theoretical aspect of
teaching a language. After my first year, I decided to develop my skills in becoming the Director of
the French House at Hendrix College (Arkansas, USA). I supervised the organization of schedules,
managed the budget, and preparations for the dinners that are held in the House during four
nights of each week. My role was to facilitate conversation in the target language within the House
and I also taught French classes within the University. I organized at least 6 weekly activities in
French and other events such as game nights, movie nights, cooking workshops, cultural
discussion, etc. This experience allowed me to create new ways of teaching French through
recreational activities.
Currently a PGCE student at University of Birmingham, I am learning to plan an accessible and
challenging curriculum, constantly reflecting on one’s lessons, lesson plans and teaching/learning
materials, with the Head of Department of Languages through my school placement at Khalsa
Academy Wolverhampton. I expect to graduate by the end of July 2021 as an NQT.

Teaching a foreign language, is, in my opinion, teaching a new way to see the world.
I have always been fascinated with Montessori pedagogy, and I consistently seek innovation in
learning and teaching methods. I base my course sessions on creative and participative workshops
in order to empower the students as main actors, which fosters an authentic interest on the part of
the student in addition to my own effectiveness in alternative education.
