About Scott

I hold a PhD and undergraduate degree in chemistry from Queen's University Belfast. I started studying in 2016, and started teaching alongside my undergraduate in 2017. As I progressed through my studies, I started taking on more and more teaching responsibilities, as I developed my knack for effectively communicating complex material to a wide range of audiences. By the end of my PhD, I was teaching lab classes and giving lectures to undergraduates and directly supervising Master's students and more junior PhDs, whilst continuing to teach A level (and equivalent) in evenings and weekends in my spare time.

When it comes to science and technology, I have always been most fascinated by utility. By the "so what" of scientific outcomes. I derive great enjoyment from solving puzzles so far as they meaningfully move the needle on human progress. Fortunately: chemistry is extraordinarily useful. It underpins everything we know about medicine, materials, and energy. I have a deep love for my subject, and I'm proud to call myself a scientist. It has enabled me to meaningfully participate in the world around me, to find solutions to great challenges, and to interrogate and explain what's going on in my surroundings. I look forward to sharing some of this with you.

About the lesson

My lessons take place via Microsoft Teams on an interactive, online shared whiteboard on which we can work together on conceptualisation, exercises, and note-taking. They are built upon 10 years of tutoring experience and high-quality teaching materials, and are suitable for IB, A Level (including CCEA), and Undergraduate level. I prefer to focus on thorough and complete understanding of subject material, with plenty of real-world examples, visualisation, and mental modelling, rather than excessive memorisation and repetition.

Chemistry as a subject is luxuriously positioned due to its inherent ability to make sense and explain the world around it. As a physical science, it largely follows cause-and-effect relationships, which means that a strong understanding of fundamental principles can be applied to more complex ideas and used to build an understanding from the ground up. When taught in schools, many experience chemistry as a "memory test," where placeholder answers take priority over genuine understanding. This is usually the result of the challenging situation schools are in, where their timeline is tight and their attention is divided, which means they must lean on tips and tricks to take shortcuts and ensure the highest grades. In my lessons, I want you to come away with the ability to absorb and utilise what you're taught in school. I'll teach you how stuff really works, and you'll be better positioned to sort and store the information you learn externally in order to build a holistic model of scientific principles.

As a professional researcher, I won't just teach you what you need to pass your exams, I'll teach you how to think like I do: like a scientist.
