About Mona
Hello! I’m Mona, an applied mathematician with a PhD from UNSW and over 20 years of teaching experience in math, physics and statistics.
I teach because I love the moment a student who was stuck suddenly understands. I’ve seen it thousands of times, and it never gets old. Many students who believe they’re “bad at math” have simply missed a step along the way. Finding that step and watching their confidence grow is the most rewarding part of my work.
I’ve taught at every level across three countries. I spent 12 years teaching secondary math and physics, then lectured in mathematics and statistics at UNSW Canberra and the University of Newcastle. My teaching was recognized with a University Teaching Award.
Because I’ve taught both high school and university, I know exactly where small gaps turn into big problems, and how to fix them early. I explain why a method works, not just how to use it, and I bring in real examples from my research, such as forecasting wind energy, so students see how math connects to the world.
Outside teaching, I love visual art and strategic board games.

My lessons are clear, structured and built around each student. I hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics and have over 20 years of teaching experience: 12 years teaching secondary maths and physics, followed by lecturing in mathematics and statistics at UNSW Canberra and the University of Newcastle, where my teaching was recognised with a University Teaching Award.
How I teach: Every student starts with a short assessment so I can see what they already understand and where the gaps are. We agree on goals together, whether that’s catching up, building confidence or aiming for top marks, and I plan lessons around them. Each lesson begins with a clear explanation of the concept, focusing on why a method works, not just how to use it. We then work through examples together before the student practises problems of increasing difficulty with my guidance. I check understanding throughout and use short quizzes to track progress, so we only move on when the student is ready. Before exams, we focus on past papers and exam technique.
Lesson length: Lessons are usually 60 minutes, which suits most high school students. For senior students, exam preparation, longer lessons could be arranged to allow time for deeper practice. Weekly lessons give the most steady progress.
Who my lessons are for:
High school students in Years 7–12, including ACT college and HSC maths and physics
University students in maths and statistics, with lessons matched to their course and assessment
Research students who need help with data analysis
In person and online: I teach in person in Canberra or online using video and a shared digital whiteboard, and provide worksheets, revision notes and practice papers.
My goal is simple: every student should leave each lesson understanding more and feeling more confident than when they arrived.
