About Jenny

Hello, I’m Jenny! I’ve spent over 25 years in education, teaching in schools and colleges, training teachers and working on national education policy. Along the way I gained a PhD, two Master’s degrees (one from Cambridge) and a post-16 teaching qualification. I also supervise doctoral students, so I know exactly what it feels like to wrestle with a big piece of writing, and how to get through it.

My PhD explored why so many students miss out on the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. It’s something I still care about deeply. I really believe everyone can think brilliantly and write with confidence when they have the right support.

I tutor because I love working one-to-one. There’s nothing better than seeing a student realise they can do something they thought was beyond them. I’m experienced in supporting students with SEND, and I’ll always adapt to how you learn best. I’d love to help you get there.

About the lesson

Every lesson is a one-hour, one-to-one session online. We use interactive tools such as shared documents and a digital whiteboard, so you are actively thinking, writing and building ideas rather than just listening.

I take a coaching approach. Rather than giving you answers, I ask the questions that help you find and test your own. That builds understanding that holds up under exam pressure or in front of a supervisor. Before we begin, we talk about what you want to achieve, whether that’s a target grade, a finished dissertation or more confidence in your writing. I then plan each lesson around those goals, so every session moves you a clear step closer.

Lessons are shaped around you:

- A-level English Literature: close reading, interpreting texts, and writing well-argued essays.
- Thinking skills: systems thinking approaches that help you see the bigger picture, including mapping complex problems, spotting connections and feedback loops, and building arguments that hold together across a whole topic or project.
- Research and dissertations, from EPQ to Master’s: shaping a research question, planning, reading critically, structuring chapters, and keeping momentum to the final draft.

Between lessons, I set short, focused tasks so the progress continues between sessions and each lesson builds on real work. With over 25 years in education and a PhD on how students grasp complex ideas, I know that confidence comes from understanding, not memorising.
