My teaching methods are fully flexible, allowing me to tailor each lessons to the needs and wishes of my students.

Background

I am currently studying for a PhD in Biological Science at the MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Cambridge. I graduated with a class 2.1 Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from Downing College, University of Cambridge in 2018. During my course I covered subjects ranging from Mathematics and Physics to Genetics and Cell Biology. I have been involved in the running of revision clinics at Truro School and have also gained teaching experience in primary schools and abroad as an English tutor.

Sophie's CV

Educational Experience:

MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Cambridge (October 2020 - present):
PhD in Biological Sciences (4 years)
Supervisor: Mathew Van de Pette

Downing College, University of Cambridge (October 2015 - June 2018):
Natural Sciences (Genetics) BA Hons, Class 2.1
Part IA Modules: Biology of Cells, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics.
Part IB Modules: Pathology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Chemistry
Part II Modules: Genetics
Graduation Date: 29th June 2018

September 2008 - July 2015 (Truro School):
A-Levels (June 2015): Chemistry (A*), Physics (A*), Mathematics (A*), Further Mathematics (A*) and English Literature (A).
GCSEs (June 2013): I achieved A*s in 11 subjects: Mathematics, English Literature, English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Geography, French, German and Religious Studies.

L6 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (June 2013): I took the L6 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge in June 2013, when I was a year younger than the intended age group, and achieved a Roentgenium award. This led to a week-long residential camp organised jointly by the Department of Chemistry and St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge.

RSC Chemistry Olympiad (January 2014 - 2015): I took the RSC Chemistry Olympiad in January 2014 and January 2015, achieving a Gold award in both years.

Work Experience:

Research Assistant, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge (August 2019 - September 2020): I worked as a Research Assistant in the McKenzie Group. I became involved in a wide range of projects being undertaken by different members of the lab, with a broader focus on understanding the role of innate lymphoid cells in health and disease.

Publishing Editor, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge (September 2018 - August 2019): I worked as a Publishing Editor on the Materials Chemistry journal portfolio. This involved supporting the peer review process, commissioning cover artwork and editing and preparing accepted manuscripts for publication. I also became involved in training Associate Editors of the journal in the peer review process and acting as their point-of-contact within the RSC.

Part II Research Project, Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge (January - March 2018): I undertook a research project focusing on the circuitry of odor discrimination in Drosophila larvae under the supervision of Dr Liria Masuda-Nakagawa. This involved planning and performing a series of GFP Reconstitution Across Synaptic Partners (GRASP) experiments. During the course of the project I gained experience in maintaining fly stocks and generating new fly lines, dissections of Drosophila larval brains, immunolabeling and anatomical analysis of confocal images.

Downing College’s Annual Telephone Campaign (September - October 2017): I was employed by Downing College to fundraise on their behalf as part of the Annual Telephone Campaign. I received extensive training to help perfect my communication and negotiation skills.

Pula General Hospital, Croatia (June 2017): I completed a 2 week hospital placement with Gap Medics, during which I spent time in both the Internal Medicine and General and Abdominal Surgery Departments. I attended a series of Global Health Tutorials, which focused on the major differences between the health care systems in Croatia and the UK and the unique challenges faced by the staff in Pula General Hospital.

Department of Cardiology, Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske (September 2016): I spent a week shadowing Dr. S. Devadathan and fellow colleagues within the Cardiology Department. This included observing angiograms and pacemaker fittings, as well as accompanying Dr. Devadathan during ward rounds and to his outpatient clinic.

Truro School (September 2015 - present): I regularly assist in the running of A-Level Chemistry Revision Clinics held during university holidays. This primarily involves helping students with questions from any part of their Chemistry course that they are struggling with but I have also given talks on topics covered in my Part IA Chemistry course.

Connor Downs Academy (April 2014 - present): I regularly help with school trips and events, based primarily with Class 2. I have also been involved with producing books for each pupil to provide a snapshot of their year.

Trevaskis Farm (April 2015 - present): I have worked at Trevaskis Farm Restaurant as a waitress during university holidays since Easter 2015. During this time, I have been involved in training new staff.

Department of Materials Science, University of Cambridge (August 2014): I carried out work experience in the Department of Materials Science under the supervision of Dr. Zoe Barber. I spent time in a number of research groups within the department, including the Device Materials, Rolls Royce and Biomaterials groups.

Additional Experience:

Lopair and Shinyway Language School, Hangzhou, Zhejiang (China) (July 2018): I have undertaken a Mandarin course in Shinyway Language School, living with a host Chinese family and working as an aupair during my stay in Hangzhou.

Extracurricular Activities:

Genetics Teaching Committee, Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge (October 2017 - June 2018): I was selected to represent the Part II Genetics class at the Teaching Committee meetings throughout this academic year.

Downing College Yearbook Committee (March 2018 - present): I am currently part of a team selected to organise the production of the yearbook for the students graduating Downing College in June 2018.

Cambridge Union Society (October 2015 - present): I have been a member of Colleges Committee, which acts as a mediator between the Society and its members, and acted as a steward at a number of events. I completed fire warden training as part of this role. I am currently the Cambridge Union Rep for Downing College.

Blake Society (September 2017 - present): I am currently the Vice President of the Blake Society, which runs a number of arts and humanities themed events within Downing College.

CATS (Cancer Awareness in Teenagers and Young People Society) Cambridge (November 2016-August 2017): I was a CATS Rep for Downing College, responsible for promoting CATS events to other members of the college.

ACHE and Truro School’s Prefect System (September 2013 - July 2015): During Sixth Form, I became very involved in ACHE, a peer mentoring scheme run by Truro School. This involved extensive training in understanding issues involving student’s mental health. I was also a Physics and First Year Form Prefect.

Truro School Terrace’s and English Magazines (September 2012-July 2015): I wrote a number of articles for both magazine’s over the course of my school career, including reports on school trips and invited speakers.
