About Shantel

For the past 4 years I've had the pleasure of working for The City University of New York College of Staten Island as a College Assistant/English Tutor. During that time I've seen my role transform from assistant to instructor and the pool of students I've been lucky enough to work with has also expanded. I've had the pleasure of assisting and instructing students at the entry level college English level, as well as ESL and EPL students, and graduate students. Whether it be learning how to compose a comparative essay or drafting a personal statement for graduate school, I have taught students of various skill levels in order to help them achieve their very best. In addition to my time at CSI, I had the opportunity to work with junior high/ high school students with LD's at the Huntington Learning Center. Prior to the pandemic, I was able to utilize Hungtington's core curriculum to assist these students in English writing, grammar, and structural development. Both experiences have helped further enhance my role as an educator and person as a whole.

About the lesson

As a graduate of the Verrazano Honors Program at the CUNY College of Staten Island—with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and minor in Journalism, Dean's List inductee, and Phi Beta Kappa honoree, I have had the privilege of seeing how impactful education is in a students life. Words have always been the most fascinating aspect of life to me. The way in which we communicate, and are subsequently heard, can at times be more impactful than what we do physically. In my several years working within the CUNY system and as an alumna, I personally see how much the structure has impacted my growth in my respective field and within my students. This growth is what I aim to achieve in the lives of each of my students.
