About Michael
Hi, I'm Michael! I'm a photographer, editor and educator based in the UK. I've been teaching photography since 2018, and it's become one of the ways I get to share a genuine love of the medium.
When I work with a student, my aim is to meet them where they are — whether that's nurturing a first curiosity about photography, or helping someone already developing their practice to push it further. I draw on a deep knowledge of photography and photographers to do that, often making connections between what a student is exploring and work they might not yet know. That kind of recognition gives students a real sense of direction, and I find it one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.
For GCSE and A-Level students, I know the curriculum inside out. I understand the hoops of the grading, and I'll help you jump through them without losing sight of what makes your work your own.
My background: I'm an active, practising photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally and published in The Guardian, British Journal of Photography, and Der Greif. In 2014 I won the Magnum Photos "30 Under 30" award. I co-founded Besides Press, an independent photography publisher, in 2021. I hold an MA in Photography from UWE Bristol and a BA in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales, and have taught at degree level at UWE Bristol and the University of Gloucestershire, with workshops and lectures at Kingston University, Falmouth University and Oxford Brookes. I've also taught GCSE and A-Level Photography in a sixth form college, guiding students through full academic years and their final exams.
I'm patient, encouraging, and genuinely love what I teach. Whatever your level, I'll help you grow with confidence.

Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or working towards your GCSE or A-Level Photography exam, my aim is simple: to leave you feeling more capable, more curious, and with a clearer sense of where your work is going.
For beginners, lessons start wherever you are. We'll work through the fundamentals - how your camera works, how to read light, how to compose a shot - but always in service of something bigger: helping you find what genuinely interests you about the world, and how to photograph it. Photography is a way of exploring and expressing things that go beyond words. I believe that excitement and understanding go hand in hand, and I'll make sure you feel both.
For GCSE and A-Level students, I offer structured support tailored to your coursework, personal study, and exam preparation. I've taught Photography at both levels in a sixth form college setting, taking students from the beginning of the academic year through to their final submissions — some achieving full marks. I understand the expectations of the curriculum and can help you develop work that is both personally meaningful and examiner-ready.
All lessons are delivered online via video call, which means I work with students across the UK regardless of location. I teach across digital and film photography, and can help with Photoshop, Lightroom and InDesign.
If you're a more advanced photographer or student looking for mentoring on a personal project, portfolio editing, or photobook sequencing, feel free to get in touch - I'm happy to discuss a tailored session.

I was Michael’s manager when he started teaching on the Photography Foundation Pathway at Arts University Bournemouth. He was very knowledgeable, committed and enthusiastic. He had an excellent understanding of practice and theory. He continues to keep up to date with the industry, and his own practice continues to develop in an exciting way. Michael is an excellent tutor and I strongly recommend him.
I worked with Michael in a large, 11-19 secondary school. Michael is exceptional in all aspects of his work - creative, diligent, resourceful but crucially he is able to draw out a student’s own artistic skills and help them use and develop those skills to communicate with a range of audiences. His calm enthusiasm, his wide knowledge across multiple genres and his methodical approaches are shared with the ultimate aim of supporting his students’ creative journey - be that better school or college grades, refining portfolios or successful application to next level education or work. If Photography is your medium, you won’t find a better tutor than Michael!
