About Julia
Kia ora, ko Julia toku ingoa
I’m a practicing conceptual installation artist and have exhibited around Aotearoa and Australia. My artwork explores contemporary uses of material and their role in facilitating abstract storytelling. I’m particularly interested in nuanced conversations around the canon and how art theory can inform our practice and way of writing about our own works. I work in te ao Māori and contemporary art and hold a strong knowledge in both.
Skill set: sculpture (woodwork, plaster, silicone, resin, whenua, found materials, organic materials, concrete), sound art (Logic Pro, Ableton, GarageBand / field, atmospheric, hydro recordings), bookbinding and formatting, tikanga Māori, text art, installation and gallery composition.
I know very basic te reo Māori and NZSL.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Art and Honours in Media Art (2024).
I acquired my undergraduate degree from Monash University (Melbourne) and Wintec (Kirikiriroa) and Honours in Media Art at Wintec.
I have experience running art classes for kids and adults, big and small. I can work with any one of any age and experience - pre-high school, high school, tertiary, or independent.
I currently work in the mental health field and have used art as a tool for social and physical rehabilitation. My experience with neurodivergent and intellectually disabled folk lends me the knowledge that everyone works slightly differently and I’m more than happy to facilitate that! Because of this we will start with a discussion with what you’re looking to get out of these sessions and what length and regularity works best for you.
My tutoring will aim to push you further into your own practice and we can explore how to think deeper into the “why”.
