About Ben

Hi! My name is Ben and I am a senior at Princeton University, studying Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. I have several years of tutoring experience. In high school, I tutored 5 middle school students (ranging from 6th to 8th grade) during my junior and senior years. In college, I have tutored nearly 20 different students through multiple online tutoring platforms including Varsity Tutors and Princeton Tutoring. The students I’ve had the opportunity to tutor range from 6th graders to college students. During the course of this time, I got experience tutoring for the following subjects: math (all levels from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations), history, writing, and general science (mainly high school and college level physics). As a tutor, I learned a lot from these experiences. For example, I learned that tutoring sessions longer than 1 hour are very difficult for the student and generally unproductive. I also learned that teaching by having the student perform the example problem (for math especially) is far more effective than merely explaining how to perform an example problem. Additionally, one of the areas in which I excelled in high school and college was an effective time-management system; helping younger students create an organized and effective time management system was particularly helpful in ensuring that homework was done on time and consistently. Beyond this, I was glad to hear from many of the parents of the students I tutored that their children had excelled in school as a result of my tutoring. I feel this is a good indication of the experience level I built up and the effectiveness of my tutoring.
Additionally, I feel that I am well qualified to be a tutor of many subjects because of my academic track record. I graduated my high school as the valedictorian, and went onto the study Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, where I currently hold an honors GPA mark. I also have a large diversity of academic exposure. During high school, I was able to take (and score a '5') on 10 Advanced Placement tests across many subjects including Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, English, and History. At Princeton, I have taken a wealth of math and engineering courses, and have also been able to take several humanities classes, including 2 history courses and 1 writing course to name a few. I believe this rigorous academic exposure leaves me well-prepared and well-informed to tutor students in many different subjects.

About the lesson

I like to reinforce fundamental concepts to students, in addition to showing them to how to complete their homework and assignments. I believe that having a strong conceptual understanding leads to more thorough mastery of concepts and ultimately better performance on tests.
