About David
For David Nakazono, the trumpet has always been more than just an instrument — it’s been a way to communicate when words fall short. A naturally reserved person, he found in music a space to express the full range of human emotion: joy, vulnerability, grief, and hope. That early connection grew into a lifelong pursuit. David earned a double major in Physics and Trumpet Performance at UC Santa Barbara, where he studied with Grant Hungerford. During that time, a thoughtful question from his father — “When are you going to quit trumpet?” — sparked a moment of clarity. It wasn’t meant to discourage, but to invite reflection. In answering it, David realized music wasn’t a side interest — it was the path he needed to follow. That realization brought him to Chicago, where he earned his Master’s degree at the Chicago College of Performing Arts under the guidance of Mark Ridenour. There, he trained with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and performed widely with ensembles including the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Philharmonic, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, and Lakeshore Brass. Now based in Honolulu, David serves as Principal Trumpet of the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra. Whether in a concert hall or a community space, David plays with the aim of offering something personal — a shared experience that resonates beyond the notes.

Brass instruments are difficult. They're difficult to play and difficult to teach. Each and every person's physical structure interacts differently with the instrument. Unlike string instruments, the piano, or percussion, on the trumpet, your body physically produces the sound that comes out of the bell. Throughout my trumpet career, I've overcome several periods where I have had to examine my own concepts of sound production. Ultimately, I've now learned that the best approach is different for each person, because the best approach is to work with your body's structure, not against it.
