I break-down the subject into simple modules which can be taken in sequence so that the basics become clear before advancing to advanced topics.
I have a presentation which I run through with my students and then discuss any unclear point on it on board/paper. All questions related to the topic are handled there and then. If someone wants a more detailed discussion, then I connect with the student separately either on email or over phone or any other method which is suitable for both.
